MAGISTERIAL FUNCTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser and Weekly Chronicle — 12 May 1888

MAGISTEl.AL F?X;CTLO S. Wrru all due respect to the gentleman who conducted the enquiry into the cause of the death of 1Tenry George Rfoff, we are strongly of the opinion that it should have been adiourned on the responsibility of the presiding magis trate. The father of the boy objected to the inquiry being conducted by a JTustice of the Peace on the ground that it should have hben made the subject for coronial inrestigation ; and, further more, lie was not represented by counsel. Tie was perfectly right in urging this objection, but he could not help being overruled in the matter when he was in fornned that he would have to pay any expense incurred by an adjournment at his request, and that the presiding ma gistrate was rested with the powers of a coroner. In this case, especially in fhe absence of legal acumen, wihy was not a jurj' impanelled ? A mere spectator has no locie stapntdi, and he therefore is not in i position to ask questions that will naturally present theimselves to...

THE MAN AT THE CORNER. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser and Weekly Chronicle — 12 May 1888

THE'I MAN AT lTHE CORNER, " A snapper-up of incosidered trifles." Thlis is how "The Man in the Corner," writing in the " Traralgon Record," refers to our "Shocky": Doubtless, Mr. Elditor, your paragraphist who indulged in the speculation that the solitary pig which appeared at the abortive snagging meeting at Morwell was attracted thitler by the odour of Traralgon cabbage stumps, was quite unaware that lie was throwing a Parthian arrow at one of the principal residents. It seemts that such is the case. if Iread the following ADVERTISER clipping correctly: "Suocsc A?AoN. - \e are vexed to think the " Record" was mistaken in re garl to the case of an '" original snagger" in the shapeof "Shoieky." We can assure our contemporary, that the stubstantial baconlike appearatnce of " Shocky" is .roof suflicient that lie does not live on the smell of Traralgon vegetables. Were our con temporary a little better acquainted with " Slmeky," it wohld be quite willing to agree, that an intelligent i...

The deceased who was a man of about 45 or 50 years of age. was recently an inmate of the Gippsland Hospital, and left there only a few days ago. He then went to Moe, and on Friday evening gave the driver of the Walhalla coach a mail parcel and and overcoat to take to Moondarra, stating that he was going home but would walk,; as he had business to do on the road.
