The Secretary, Mr. Leon L. , Yictorsen, requests us to notify that Jewish young men may obtain particulars from him (either personally or by letter) at his residence ' Unsworth ' London-st., Enmore, or between 1 and 2 p m. at Thomas-st., Ultimo. .'£?'? USURY. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 May 1898

USURY. Last Thursday afternoon (says the ' Jewish World' of March 18), Sir George Lewis, addressing the Commission of Inquiry upon Money-Lending, spoke his mind in terms which must be verv pleasing to every Jew worthy the name. The veteran lawyer drew a plain picture of the evils resulting from money, lending, and he pointed out that the Jewish lxIUlJcy-lc.Liu.eJ. 10 unuicitiiciCLi kjj ullo vjyvxj. wm nmnity. It is a relief to remember that the unsavoury pursuit is not followed by Jews alone, but the statements made by Sir George Lewis cannot be too clearly insisted upon. We attach no importance to the undeniable fact that there are money-lenders and usurers who are, personally, good fellows, and deserve their friends, that the money-lending fraternity runs great risks, that the men who borrow are often greater rogues than the men who lend. The whole business is against Jewish law, it is in compatible with usual, honourable service to the community, it degrades the community in the ...

Jewish Agricultural Settlements in America. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 May 1898

Jewish Agricultural Settlements in America. ' From an account published in the 'Journal' of Lewiston, Maine, it would appear that farming in the district is being pursued by Jews with success. The writer says that ' A startling number of Hebrew farmers have made itheir appearance, and their farms are becoming ^rich and fertile as the result of hard labour bpersistently indulged in from morning till ?night. A Welcome Revival. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 May 1898

: A Welcome Revival. * After a temporary interment, the Hebrew monthly ffyWH (' Haschiloah,,' Itzkowski, Berlin) has again come to life. The friends of this paper have protested so strongly that the editors have resolved to make another bid for popularity. When the monthly started, I feared that it would not endure ; but, like the protestors just quooed, I teel gratetul that the managers are striving so earnestly to ( disprove this prophecy. The January number is rich in good matter. First there is a spirited plea for a ' Spiritual Zionism ' to precede the the ''Political Zionism.' The writer in effect says: 'First convert your Jews to Judaism, then talk of restoring them to the Holy Land.7' : Of the literary articles, those of David Cahana ' on 'Ben Sira' and 'Samuel Luzzato ' deserve special mention. The whole number is bright and readable. — The Jewish Chronicle.

New Zealand. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 May 1898

New Zealand. There was a full muster of the representatives of the Bar at the sitting of the Warden's Court at Livingstone (says the ' Oamaru jVlail '). In addition to three gentlemen from Oamaru there was a ' learned lady friend ' from Dunedin in the person of Miss Ethel Benjamin. For a lady to practise in the Warden's Court is unique, and in consequence all the miners from the surrounding district put in their appearance at the sitting. The lady was so effective with her objections that at one time the large audience were on the verge of applauding her, and were only kept in check by the warden's voice ringing out telling them they must not interfere. Although a little nervous at first she made herself heard, and with cool, telling sentences made her meaning clear.
