Progress Association. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 24 December 1909

Progress Association. The adjourned meeting of residents who had met last week for the purpose of forming a progress association, was held in the committee room of the shire hall, on Tuesday night last, when there were about 20Y gentlemoen present. The Rev. E. H. Nye was voted to the chair. Tl'was the third attempt nade, and althlih there was a great improvement in the attendance it was considered by Mr. G. D. Leckie to be inadvisable to form an association with so few present. This was borne out by Mr. Fox, who ex. pressed.himself in like manner at the two previous meetings, preferring to see, as he stated, " the association formed on a good sound basis." ' Mr. Bazely. at the previous meeting, also spoke and made a like suggestion, a motion moved by this gentle man being ,carried, and a promise made by all present to assist in making a good meeting. On Tuesday night Mr. G. ·D. Leckie moved and MIr. J. A. Baker as. conded, that a requisition be prepared and presented to the President...

Around the Shops. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 24 December 1909

Around the Shops. It is always a pleasureable duty to make a yearly visit to the many leading houses in Alexandra. It was anticipated that the advent of the Iron Horse would mean an increase in the . number of business places. This is not so and from preent aipe rances there does not seemIi to he any likelihood of such for a con silerable timne, unless, of course, some tring unforseen happens. For instance the striking of something permanent at the Alexandra Rieefs Co., the starting of the M.orning Star, and the consummation of the connecting link with the Rubicon Forest. Very little can be said of the progress of the town. "Itetrogado!" we are sorry to say, is the word to be applied when speaking of this matter. We trust wtth such an institution as a progress association the town and district of Alexandra will progress. Judging from the usefulness such associations have proved to be to places like Yea, Manstield and IHealearslle, there is no doubt such an important centre as Alex a...

Counhs9 Ironchitis9, PS a7umJ Ji iJ A, mption Those who have taken this medicine are amazed at its splendid healing power. Sufferers from Bronchitis, Cough, Croup, Asthma, Difficulty of Breathing, Hoarseness, Pain or Soreness in the Chest, experience delightful and rapid relief; and to those who are subject to Colds on the chest it is invaluable, as it effects a complete cure. It is most comforting in allaying Irritation in the Throat and giving Strength to the Voice, and it neither allows a Cough nor Asthma to become chronic, nor Consump tion to develop. Consumption is not known where "Coughs" have, on their first appearance, been properly treated with this medicine. No house should be without it, as, taken at the beginning, a dose or two is generally sufficient, and a complete cure is certain. Monday Last! [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 24 December 1909

Monday Last ! Monday was a regular " Brickfielder," with a scorching hot north wind ; the evening was nice and cool and so was Tuesday. The thermometer stood at 106 degrees in the shade. No one troubled much about how the glass stood in the sun, the glass or glasses in the shades were the chief topics. Inquiries were made as to whether it was possible to get the daymen on the hydrant to allay the Dust Fiend. This was impossible; the plugs had not been opened up or used for years and as to the hydrant, it was not known if it was fit for use. There is no doubt had the main street been watered two or three times during the day much benefit would have resulted and the officers of the council would have received the thanks of the business people, all of whom were busily engaged opening up and arranging ex- pensive goods for Christmas. It was a terrible day, but the residents were cautious, especially in the town, knowing that nothing more than a "bucket service" would be available &a...

Alexandra & Yea Standard PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1909. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 24 December 1909

"PUDBL1SIIED EVERY FRIDArY. SNEC TEIMER]r NZC TIMIDIrr. VFRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1909. iT seems but a day since we last spoke of'the Christmas time, and now liko'a phiantom the year' has fled away and we have the extreme heat of summer on us again. Then came the pleasant time when autumn was gliding by, and then the long spell of winter. As we strive to force our mind to ponde rtho flight of time, we find it well-nigh im possible to believe that 'a year has sped since we spoke ls4 about .the festive season. W\hile the- world pre pares to rejoice there are sonme of, us who dwell with sadness on the march of the flying years, and say within ourselves, ".As for man, his days are as grass." There will be a stir and flutter in Alexandra and district during the next week or ten days, and perhaps some martyred parents may have oc casion to bewail the excess of animal spirits which makes the household lively at holiday times. For our part, we like to think of the delight which the children of ...
