UNCLE CONVICTED OF ASSAULT ON NEPHEW STRATHEWEN FAMILIES IN COURT Climax To 20 Years. Of Bitterness Between Brothers FAMILY bitterness which, according to evidence, had lasted for 20 years between two brothers, each ipparently about 70 years: of age, was aired in Eltham Court on Wednesday, when one of them was charged with having inflicted actual bodily harm on the. i son of the other. The story' unfolded referred to controversies which had occurred concerning the repairs to a bridge on the property of one of them but used by both, and also-repairs to a dividing fence. His head had been split open in two places, in one place the bone being exposed and necessitating the insertion of stitches. POSTPONED "FOR T E DURAlTON Eltham Hall Committee's Decision Confirmed DILATORINESS BY COUNCILLORS ALLEGED . ELTHAM Hall Committee's decision to postpone "for the duration" the erection of a new public hall was con firmed at a public meeting of subscribers and contributors held last Thursday night. •Criticism of the Committee for.l.having reached its .decision without calling a public mieeting was made in a. letter from Mr. H. Councillors who, he said, had opposed the proposal and delayed it for months were criticised by Dr. Bradbury, who said that had it not been for their dilatoriness the hall would have been well on the way to completion. At the - same time the general public were censured for not sup porting the Committee by attending functions arranged to raise funds for the hall. A discussion took place concerning the use to ...

D.V.F.A. GRAND FINAL GAME EPPING WIN ANOTHER PREMIERSHIP GREENSBOROUGH'S WRETCHED KICKING [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser — 2 August 1940

D.V.F.A. GRAND FINAL GAME EPPING WIN ANOTHER PREMIERSHIP GREENSBOROUGH'S WRETCHED KICKING GENERALLY displaying more enterprise, Epping always held command in a hard but mediocre class game to win the 1940 Premiership after an unbeaten season. Their victory was made more easy by the poor kicking of the Greensborough forwards, whose 14 shots produced only 2 goals, while several possible goal chances went out of bounds. This inaccuracy had a discouraging effect on the whole team and undoubtedly affected their form. Although dull overhead, the weather was fine; the ground was in splendid order and conditions generally were perfect for football. Unfor tunately, however, the play did not at any time become exciting, and as as result the spectators were strangely quiet for a Grand Final. The captains' views before the games T. OARSE (Giwensborough) : Con Ildent of victory as his team were yclung and were now playing better tian at any time during the season. lie also expected the secks to ...

Kinig Inspects T roops EASY INFORMALITY For the first time in his reign, the King of Britain, which means the King of Australia, inspected an Australian fighting force. The King's visit to the troops was iot a mere formality. It was made at the King's express desire. Unofficially, I learn that when the visit was discussed, the King suggested today as a suitable. date. "But tell me if it won't do," he added. "I don't want to make myself a nuisance.' His Majesty's arival in the Austral lan ti'aining area without fuss or even obvious protection. Dictators meet their .Eubjects at a distance of half a mile behind bullet-proof glass. The King came unostentdtiously with a single equerry and his only visible bodyguard was a beady-eyed gentle man in a bowler hat. CASUAL TALlKS The King walked through.the Aus tralian ranks with little ceremony; face to face with the men who hlad travel led so far to fight for his kingdom. Here and there he paused to-talk cas uaily With eqiually casual private...
