Sydney's Protest Against The Tariff. (From the "S. M. Herald.") [Newspaper Article] — Werriwa Times and Goulburn District News — 30 October 1901

Sydney's Protest Against The Tariff. (From the " S. M. Herald.") Tim gathering of the citizens at the Town Hall on Monday night to pro test against the tariff was undoubtedly one of the- largest, as well as the most Unanimous, that has ever been held in t)ie city. .. Even the vast accommoda tion of the floor space and galleries of tlie Centennial Hall was fuily taken lip, and the term " packed" was more than a mere phrase. Hundreds, of people who arrived only a few minutes after 7 o'clock failed to get near any of the numerous entrance doors, and if was now apparent that a very large contingent of people were waiting in the vicinity of the building for an overflow meeting, which was subse quently held. A special feature of the main demonstration was that iadies attended in considerable force and shared in the general enthusiasm. The welcome accorded to Mr. Reid when, accompanied by the chairman, Sir James Graham (Mayor), he appeared on the platform, was worthy of the occasion. Only ...

Mr. Reid's Little Game. [Newspaper Article] — Werriwa Times and Goulburn District News — 30 October 1901

Mr. Reid's Little liamc. Mn. BartoS' said on Monday, refer ring to the tariff controversy, " I sec Mr. Reid has said in an interview: 'The federation which the worliers of Victoria looked forward to as the beginning of a new era of prosperity has grievously disappointed them. Instead of Victoria overrunning all the markets of Australia, as they expected, the result has been the very opposite. The people of Melbourne are tremb ling at the prospect of the free compe tition of Sydney, hence large linns in Melbourne and Adelaide are establish ing branch factories in Sydney. It is becoming too evident to Melbourne people that the effect of federation will be to transfer a large, jjjjrlion of their manufacturing preeminence to the mother colony, thus making things worse than ever in Victoria.'" " Provincialism," said the Prime Minister, "was to be expected from Mr. Keid, whose ardor in that con nection is very well known. But if would be a surprise to hi; friends in Sydney to find that ard...

Werriwa Times. WEDNESDAY, OCT. 30, 1901. MR. REID IN SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — Werriwa Times and Goulburn District News — 30 October 1901

.Werqtw# Times. WEDNESDAY, OCT. 30, igoi.' MR. KEID IN SYDNEY. The great public meeting in Sydney 011 Monday night to protest against the federal tariff was undoubtedly unani mous, Where could be found a crowd oE people :who would. clamor for in creascd taxation ? Monday's meeting was earnestly opposc:l to the tariff, and the speeches delivered were in perfect unison with the feelings of those present, and were applauded to the echo. Not'nl thic pnHirnlar meofc ing, but somewhere else, it was ad vanced that the tariff should be sub mitted to a referendum of the whole; people. Would anyone vote for this or any tariff? How many persons could be found to vote that their taxes be increased ? Mr. Reid was in fine form. He had the whole audience with him. He slated the Federal Premier and Mr. R. E, O'Connor, and he tlattened out Sir William Lyiie. Victoria has been convinced of the error of her ways in hugging protec tion by some speeches delivered in Melbourne by New South Wales free-: t...
