MANSFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 23 December 1870

MANSFIELD. The weather up to Sunday night was frightfiully hot, but on M1onday morning a delicious change took place, and a refreshing coolness, accompanied by showers came on. On Saturday afternoon, between 7 and 8 p.m., Mansfield was visited by a most terrific thunderstorm, with heavy rain, which lasted ncnarly an hour. Travelling South West it passed over Mr Chenery's Station, on the Devil's River, where it was the cause of a shocking catastrophe. Some of the Shearers were in the men's hut, but two of them close to the fire place, one standing the other sitting. A flash of lightning struck the chimney and killed instantane ously the man who was sitting down, and in juring the one who was standing up so much that for a long time his life was despaired of. The deceased man had been struck across the chest and thighs, the other across the thighs only. The latter man suffered the most intense agony, his screams being de scribed as fearul, he is however improving. A great portion of t...

Correspondence. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 30 December 1870

( rttErsjulplnre. (T'o the Editor.) Srx,-Never in the whole course of my life did I ever.witness such disgraceful con duct on the part of a legislative body, as that exhibited on Tuesday evening last. in our Shire Council. I did not believe that five men could be got in any community who would be openly guilty of such unmanly procedure- What has Mr Downing .been guilty of that he should- be treated, so harshly? I have heard a good deal of growling against him, but what man could hold his office so long without giving offence to somebodly? Has anything been proved against him? Obly a. few days ago the Government Auditors testified that his books .had been kept.in a satisfactory manner, end that vouchers for every penny of expendi ture hait been produced. Even those who first reduced his salary to loss than that of a cook, barman. or waiter at one of our or. dinary hotels, and then move that he be " removed forthwith,"'' bould not bring a single charge against him. Mr Peteridn, nwho b...
