At last^— aft^r repeated assurances on the part of the Hon. Treasurer that increased! taxation would be unnecessary for so -re time to come: — the taxation proposals of the Parkes Government are before the country in the shape of a Property and a Land Tax. Both H these measures have been rushed into, the Assembly and will not unlikely receive the sanction of both Houses. As might have been expected, the Treasurer, when these Bills were ; before the Lower House made gigantic efforts to show both their utility and temporary necessity ; but ?why these qualities were not sooner dis covered is one of those puzzles with which common mortals dare not interfere. When the Parkes Government, -with a flourish of trumpets assumed office, it was distinctly upon the u nderstanding that the deficit -was to be provided for aud the finances of the countiy put upon a -fair commercial basis.
