Evidence points to systemic killings in Timor by Doug Struck and Keith B. Richburg The Washington Post KUPANG, Indonesia - Jani thought he was safe on the ferry. After three days of terror in East Timor, the boat would lake him and two college friends to refuge, he thought. Then the militiamen boarded. No young men may leave East Timor, they announced as the boat prepared to depart. Jani, 27, tried to hide; the militiamen caught his friends. "Are there any others?" the militia demanded. Jani recalls. "No, no other young men," replied his friends in a last gift of kindness. They marched Armando Gome/ , 29, and Armando DiSilva, 30. lo the front of the boat and killed them before 200 refugees. Gomez's body was dumped in the sea; DiSilva's on the ground by the dock. Jani raced through the boat. "Please help me," he whispered to the other refugees. A mother motioned to him to hide between her and her children. The searching militiamen walked bv. The account of Jani. now a fearful...

lawsuit filed against Oklahoma State's Sigma Nu for hazing [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1999

lawsuit filed against Oklahoma State's Sigma Nu for hazing by Janna Clark The O'Collegian Oklahoma State University A lawsuit filed agains( Oklahoma State University Sigma Nu fraternity in August of 1997 is now going to trial. Ryan Foster, management information systems junior and former Sigma Nu pledge, is suing the fraternity for acts of hazing. Attorney John M. Thetford of Stipe Law Firm in Tulsa filed the suit. He said the fraternity's defense attorneys filed a motion for summary judgment, in which the defense asks the judge to dismiss the case because the defense contends the case has no merit. Thetford said defense attorneys claimed Sigma Nu, Inc., the national fraternity, was a separate entity from the local chapter. Defense attorneys said the national fraternity is not responsible for the local chapter members. After reviewing the motion, the judge denied it, Thetford said. "The judge thinks there is merit in the case," he said. The defense then filed a motion to rec...

Colleges roll out national campaign to fight binge drinking by Christine Tatum CHICAGO (TMS) — More than 100 colleges and universities are behind a national ad campaign aiming to curb binge drinking and alcohol abuse among students. Plans were in the works long before Colorado State University students hurled beer cans and booze bottles at police officers trying to prevent them from rushing the field after the Rams' Sept. 4 upset win againt UCBoulder. Long before Madison police spent a night over Labor Day weekend breaking up brawls involving about 70 students leaving bars near the University of Wisconsin. College administrators had right to censor student yearbook, court rules [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1999

College administrators had right to censor student yearbook, court rules by Christine Tatum CINCINNATI. Ohio (TMS) — College newspapers and yearbooks could be subject to the same content restrictions imposed on many high schools because of a federal appeals court's ruling backing a Kentucky State University administrator's decision to confiscate a campus yearbook. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit on Wednesday rejected the claims ol two KSU students who accused the school of violating their First Amendment rights by censoring a yearbook and the campus newspaper. The court also upheld the university's removal of the student newspaper's faculty adviser after she refused to censor content criticizing the university. The students, judges said, failed to show how the yearbook's censorship and their adviser's absence (she was reinstated after filing a grievance) harmed their rights to free speech. The ruling has riled journalism professors and ...

Little man on campus: College welcomes 10-year-old freshman [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1999

Little man on campus: College welcomes 10-year-old freshman RICHMOND, Va. (TMS) — With the exception of squirrels on campus, everyone roaming around Randolph-Macon College is taller than 10-year-old Greg Smith, the school's youngest student. His parents dropped him off Monday for an honors course load worth 17 credit hours — perhaps not a difficult schedule for a kid who blew through 10 grades of school in three years. Greg graduated third in his high school class of 650 students in June. On the surface he appears to be a typical kid, preferring to play with children his own age. But probe a little further, and he's quick to discuss ideas for the development of nonviolent conflict resolution programs, cures for cancer and AIDS and his own aspirations of securing three doctorate degrees in political science, biomedical engineering and aerospace engineering. Greg will live with his folks and commute to the 1. lOO-siudent liberal arts college, located about 20 miles north of Ri...

Top 40 music finally hits the web [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1999

Top 40 music finally hits the web by Douglas Smith staff writer Musicmaker.com and Zomba, an independent music company, have reached an agreement that will finally allow songs from the top of the charts to be available through on-line compilations. In the past, music sites have relied on 30-year old hits, obscure artists, and unknown bands. In October, however, computer surfers can custom create CDs featuring such acts as Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys and R. Kelly. Often on a group or artist's homepage, pieces of songs are available for listening. Sometimes the full song may be available with the aid of a Real Player or Liquid Audio. However, Musicmaker.com, a Reston, Virginia company, allows computer users to select songs from a catalog of more than 200,000 mostly-older tunes. These tunes can then be "burned" onto a CD and the custom ized discs are mailed to the specific user. Prices range from $9.95 lo $24.95 depending on the number of songs selected. Using Real Play...

Tupac legend lives on [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1999

Tupac legend lives on by Douglas Smith staff writer Tupac Shakur has once again received national attention. His legacy keeps growing throughout the United States and with good reason. Tupac - proved himself not only in music, but also in life. Despite this, some Americans have elaborated on a so-called "conspiracy" surrounding his death. In case you haven't heard, a new album featuring the kite Tupac Shakur has been released this mould. The album features a protege group called The Outlaw/, that collaborated with 2Pac on "Hit 'Em High." The constant barrage of new songs from the late rapper is also a reminder that his spirit will never die. The album entitled Still I Rise (at press time) was supposed to hit record stores on the 24th of August but was postponed two weeks. The record company cited production delay as the reason for late release. Despite all of this, many people find it remarkable and perhaps surprising how much of an impact 2Pac has made on the mainstream mus...

STUDENT CLUB OF THE WEEK [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1999

STUDENT CLUB OF THE WEEK Ihmm MmMwimmm^mi JB ^ ai irdl by Elizabeth Hayes associate editor The Lion Entertainment Board is an organization on campus that sponsors events for students. More specifically, it sponsors non-alcoholic events on the weekends so that students may have something constructive to do. The movies shown in the Reed Union Building every weekend, and the comedians, bands, karaoke, and other special performers featured in Bruno's Cafe, are all due to the workings of the LEB. For those who are confused and have not been paying attention to the signs posted around campus, LEB was formerly called the Student Programming Council until this year. According to club president Terry Brand, the name was changed primarily because the organization felt the former name was lacking "spirit," and didn't sound as appealing to the student body. Also, it was changed from a "council" to a "board" to help express the fact that students were working together to make these dec...

MTV Awards Show Rocks [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1999

MTV Awards Show Rocks by J.D. Considine The Baltimore Sun Most acts on TV live in mortal fear of being "too hip for the room." that is, working off cultural references most squares wouldn't get. That's not an issue on MTV. Never mind that much of what gets air-time on MTV sails right over the heads of average Americans (especially if they happen to be over the age of 25); within its own rarefied frame of reference, it's almost impossible to be too hip for MTV. But Lord knows, the Video Music Awards broadcast Thursday night tried. With comedian Chris Rock as host and featuring performances by Nine Inch Nails, Lauryn Hill, the Backstreet Boys and Kid Rock, the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards was everything that award shows usually aren't - entertaining, unpredictable, provocative and frequently unquotable in a family newspaper. What other show would refer to Latin pop idol Ricky Martin as "the Puerto Rican Al B. Sure?" Where else would you hear the Artist Formerly Known As Prince ...

'Practice,' 'McBeal' take top Emmy Honors by Brian Lowry Los Angeles Times L()S ANGELES _ The love affair beiween Ihe television industry and David E. Kelley swelled to historicproportions Sunday, as two legal programs created by the producer, "The Practice" and "Ally McBeal." were recognised as best dramatic and comedy series, respectively, at the 51st annual Nighttime Emmy Awards. It's a feat unmatched by any television producer, all Ihe more remarkable considering that Kelley wrote nearly every episode of both programs, which is virtually unheard of in the television business. In addition to being the first onehour program to successfully vie in the comedy series balloting, "Ally McBeal" ends "Frasier's" unprecedented five-year streak as best comedy - a total unequaled by any series, comedy or drama. Starring Calista Flockhart as a daffy law yer. ihe show also becomes the first l-'ox scries to win in either of those prestigious categories. Kelley. who was also honored wit...

The View From Here [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 17 September 1999

The View From Here Baseball: Americas' Favorite Pastime? what were you doing this Sunday afternoon'.' Well if you weren't watching one of the many opening games of the NFL season I'm going to have to ask to see your greencard. Football has slowly become America's favorite pastime. With the return of the football season, baseball is now taking a back seat to the NFL. Whether you are a fan of the front runner or a loyal fan of a basement dweller you can find enjoyment in any game that is on television. Games are fun to watch even when your favorite teams aren't playing. When was the last time you ordered piz/a and invited your buddies over to watch a game between the Marlins and Brewers? It just doesn't happen. I have watched football games between two teams I personally hate, but entertainment is entertainment. Baseball, on the other hand, is quite boring to view on television. Even when my favorite baseball team is on TV I still find it very difficult to sit through an ent...
