All about Meerschaum tt'HAT IS IT I—1VIIEI1E FOUSD—HOW CULOltED. This article, which js so mucli esttfftncd by the tobacco smoker, is not the foatn of the sea, as . many suppose, but iaahydratod silicate of magnesia, but a,s,the compound is not crystaline itn constituents aro variable, and silicate of iron and alumina occur with it; these afl'eet the color of 1 the meerschaum, which, when pure, i«j quite white. The presence of silicate of iron imparts a tint varying from ' yellow to deep mown. Good meerschaum is soft and yields readily, to the knife, especially after having been melted. The fracture is, usually earthy, seldom conchoidal. The state of ^a ' ggeration is so variable as to give risfe to various densities—some kinds sink in water, others float on its surface. The Bottom of the Sea ' Our investigations go to show that the roaring waves and the mightiest billows of the ocean repose, not upon hard or troubled beds, but upon cushions of still wutfi 1 ; that everywhere at the bottom of the deep sea the solid ribs of "the earth are protected, as with a garment,-from the abrading action of'its currents; that the cradle of its restless waves is lined by a stream of water at rest, or so nearly at rest that it can neither wear nor uinve the slightest bit of .drift that once lodges there. The uniform appearance of these microscopic shell i, and thtj almost total absence ainlong them ofj any sediment from the sea nr foreign matter, suggests most forcibly the idea of nerfeet repose at the bottom of the s- -a. bonie ot-the specimens are as jiurc and as freo from sea sand as the fresh fallen show tlake is from thediist of the earth. Indeed, these soundings almost prove that the sea, like the snow-' cloud with- its flakes in a calmis always lott...
