Recent Public Sales . [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 15 April 1898

Recent Public Sales . A fair crowd of breeders from a distance and a large local crowd greeted CoL Woods at Osceola . Iowa , April 6 th . when he mounted the auctioneers stand preparatory to closing out the herd of Short-horn cattle of A . Cooley __ SonB . The local men . however , did not seem to be fully awake to their own interests , and , as a result , most of the good things went outside of the county . Preparatory to crying the sale Col . Woods Introduced Martin Flynn . of Des Moines , and requested him to give a little talk on Short-horn cattle as he viewed them after thirty years of successful breeding . Mr . Flynn . though taken by surprise , responded In a neat little speech , in which he dwelt upon the promising outlook for the future of good cattle , and that of the Short-horns In particular . The bidding followed . The average on the whole offering was $ 140 . 71 . Tbe females averaged $ 136 . 67 . the bulls 9153 . 83 . A number of bargains were secured In females . For...

Ih « Hog . [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 15 April 1898

Ih « Hog . Contributions on subjects connected with iwlns manacement are cordially invited . The Sow s Milk . The experiment stations are carrying investigations In every direction that seems in any way likely to benefit the farmers . We notice that the Wisconsin station has been endeavoring to determine the yield and the composition of sow s milk , which , as our readers on the farm will understand , is not a very easy matter . Sows object to being milked by hand . The method used is to take a sow with a full litter , keep the pigs separated until they are hungry and the sow anxious , then weigh the pigs , let them suck to their satisfaction , and then weigh them again , the difference in the weights being the amount of milk the sow is supposed to have given at the time . The averages of four sows between April 2 d and June 25 th were as follows : No . 1 , 5 , 8 pounds , avoir ., per day . No . 2 , 4 . 1 pounds , avoir ., per day . No . 3 , 5 . 4 pounds , avoir ., per day . No . 4 ...

Hay Sheds . [Newspaper Article] — Wallace's Farmer — 22 April 1898

Hay Sheds . Hay mating seems a long way off now that the grass is just beginning to grow , but it will be here in all prcbability with many readers unprepared . The man who proposes to make gocd hay , hay that has large spending p-w-er and beef or butter potency , should have a hay shed . If he intends to let the clover stand until all the heads are turned brown , or the timothy until it is fit to cut for seed , it does not matter much . The kind of hay he makes Is not of much account , anyhow . He may think it is , but only because he does not know any better , and it is not a matter of very great importance whether he puts it in a shed or stacks it . It is otherwise , however , with the farmer who proposes to have , hay that has feed in it , that sticks to the ribs , builds up good rich blood , that has a great potency for musclemaking , or milk or fat production . That man ought to have a hay shed . We do not say barn , because a good many of our readers are unable to build anoth...
