THE POULTRY YARD j Cross-Bred Table Fowls . Some time since I communicated to The Field a short account bf some experiments in breeding table fowls , in reference to the origin of the dlfrerent French breeds : As I have continued the experiment to the present season , I wish to lay the results before your readers . THE APIARY [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 5 September 1868

THE APIARY Bees Hot Dormant in Winter . During the past Winter I made frequent examinations of a strong colony of bees kept In a Langstroth glass hive . In tbe morning of cold days , they could be seen concentrated in the four spaces between the five central combs .- By two oclock of the same day , provided the sun shone brightly , the hive would become so warmed up that the bees would be found considerably scat-, tered through the . hive , some on the outside combs , some in the openings of tbe honey board , and many even clustering between the ends of the frames and the glass in tbe back part of the hive , which stood toward , theSouth , and was consequently tbe warm- est part of : this hive . At night they , would retreat to the ceutral spaces again . This I saw repeatedly with undeviating regularity —even on the coldest days , provided the sun shone but steadily and . brightly all day . The object of this separation of the bees from the main cluster is , not simply to enjoy the ...
