From an Old Sailor . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
From an Old Sailor . Hudson , N . Y . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen—January . 1911 , I pinned my faith to Berkshires ( after most two to Berkshires ( after most two years trial ) and now lash myself to the wheel , as old sailors would say , and sink or swim with the Berks ire ship . I have one fine boar and six sows for a starter ; will have two boars and thirty sows one year from today—God willing . I want the best and if I live i will have it . I received my book on Swine . Must say that the professor puts in too many lines and curves for a fat head like me . What we fat ones need is more practical advice , like my friend Lovejoy gives . I have worked on theories for nearly two years , and when I go over to see my friend from Boston ( a real city farmer ) I generally come away batty for he * s full of theories . If they would only say take so much middlings , corn meal , skim milk , etc ., and see your pig grow , how simple it would be . That is what Mr . Lov...
A Futurity Question [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
A Futurity Question To The Berkshire World . My Dear Sirs : —I wrote you several days ago , nominating my young herd boar and two of my young sows for the Futurity Shows . I note from the information circular , under the head of classifications , it refers to animals for competition six and under twelve months and under six months , but makes no reference or provision for animals twelve months and under eighteen . My young boar and the two young sows will be twelve and under eighteen months this fall . I write to know if they will be eligible for the Futurity Show as such ? THE EDITORS ANSWER . I fear you have misinterpreted the Futurity idea . As stated in the circular , it is the get of boars and the produce of sows that are eligible to the Futurities . If the boar and sow are both nominated , on or before February 1 , 1911 , the pigs out of such nominated sows and sired by nominated boars , if farrowed between September 1 , 1910 and March 1 , 1911 , are eligible to the under- a y...
Resume of the Hog Market for 1910 . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
Resume of the Hog Market for 1910 . ( Specially Prepared by Clay Robinson Co . ) The average price for hogs at Chicago for 1910 was $ 8 . 90 . This stood as the highest yearly average ever recorded , $ 1 . 55 higher than the 1909 average , $ 3 . 20 better than the 1908 average and $ 2 . 80 higher than that of 1907 . Conditions which began to take shape shortly after the unreasonable and indiscreet liquidation of the closing months of 1907 , and which were not remedied in 1908 and 1909 on account of the high price of corn , were responsible for a shortage in hog production in 1910 such as the trade had not experienced before since the days of the civil war . First effects of this deficiency in the available supply of porkers were felt in the closing months of 1909 , but ft was not until 1910 was well on its way that the public at large felt the full significance of an inadequate hog supply . The year opened with tops up to $ 7 . 90 , but January was not ended before $ 9 . 00 was reac...

Taken as a whole , this is a splendid lot of Berkshires , fashionably bred , and bred to as good boars as the breed produces . I receive many letters from breeders who have purchased in my former sales , all stating that the purchases they have made from me have invariably proved profitable and it is my opinion that breeders will find many such in the sale on March 8 th . I wish to extend a very cordial invitation to Berkshire breeders to attend the sale , but if your business prevents your attendance...
A Trip Through Ohio [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911
A Trip Through Ohio Ohio is fast forging to the front as a Berkshire state , and many of the best herds in the country are today found in this state that has produced so many Presidents . We recently had the pleasure of a week s trip among a few of the prominent breeders of the state , and hope soon to And time to call on many others . We would be glad to devote considerable space to a full account of the many good things we saw at these Ohio Berkshire establishments , but * lack of space forbids only a casual mention of each of them . Many Berkshire breeders will soon be in attendance at the American Berkshire Congress at Columbus , Ohio , on February 7 th and Sth , and those going via Cincinnati should take the time to visit Sheffield Farm , Glendale , Ohio , just twelve miles north of Cincinmiati , and within easy reach from the city by trolley . All will doubtless go to Millersburg , Ohio , on February 9 th , for Mr . G . B . Helmuth s Annual Mid-Winter Bred Sow Sale , which occ...
