NOV. 15. j Tlie Wheeling Post Office* 1 Wo doaire to say a few words to the i editor of the rebel bheet on this subject, : inasmnch as once or twice, previous to ' his issue of yesterday, he has referred ' to it. He has sought to disseminate the idea that in opposing Mr. Johnson's ' present blind and fatal policy, we had no higher motive than simply to retaliate upon him for superseding us in the Wheeling Post Office. And, also, he has labored to prove that it is very ungrateful in us to be opposing that policy. In other words, that it is gross ingratitude to requite Mr. Johnson as we are doing, in return for the obligations we owe him, because we held office under him for a short time. We have a very brief and plain answer to make to the editor of the rebel sheet, in reply to ail that ho has said, at one time and another, on thi...

Sold.?Two sportive young gentlemen of this city, thoroughly posted in its ins and outs and ripe lor fun, recently hit upon a lucky idea. Procuring an old pocket book they posted inside of it in staring capitals the word, Sold. Then they laid it down on the iron grating in front of that excellent hotel, the Sprigg House. Retiring to the curbstone, they patiently awaited developments. Presently a well dressed man made his appearance, sauntering slowly along. His eye fell upon the pocket book. He looked around cautiously but quickly to see if any one was going for it. Visions of fast horses, a well lilted cellar, a hospitable board, and a downy couch, lloated before his mental vision. Possibly he thought...

Brother Wharton, of the Parkers* burg Times, thinks that iu our allusion to his occasional re ferences as to what Wheeling people say oT Parkersburg, we intend to excite a prejudice against that place, and, also, against his efforts to build it up. He does not like our quotation from his local columns of the item about coal, and he gives us to understand that he is in earnest when he talks of Parkersburg's ability to become a supplying point for that article, even if she does at this present time import her own consumption of it from Wheeling and Pittsburgh. Ife furthermore tells us that "iron is nearer and more abundant" in that region than in this, and that the time is to come when Parkersburg will "be richer than Wheeling over was or ever can be." And he also tells us that the great regret connected with his life while here, i...

Of course we did not expect to satisfy tbe editor of the Wheeling Register in regard to oar resignation of the position of Postmaster in the summer of 1864. We therefore did not write in that view. Our aim was to meet his insinuations and assertions to the public in regard to our holding on to tfet position, for the mere love of it, until at last deprived , of it by his present patron. President Johnson. We showed, by a citation from our letter of resignation, that the controlling motive that induced us?to offer our resignation, was that we might tho more exclusively devote our attention and energies to the interests of this paper, and, In doing so, to 'aid in the re-election of Mr. Lincoln, and thus, strengthen as far as possible tho prosecution of the war. Wo also showed how it happened, contr...

We are now pasbing through one of those fluctuations, characteristic of paper money inflation, to which we alluded yesterday morning. The tendency for the time being is strongly downward. In fact last Saturday there was almost a panic in the business circles in New York. Merchandise and stocks were sold very freely and holders were glad to get rid of their loads at heavy sacrifices. There is no telling where the downward turn will stop. Although there is more tirmness announced in stocks this morning, yet that is no indication, as the heavy "short" interest created within the last week is no doubt being covered. The general markets, such as flour, wheat, pork, Ac., show continued heaviness, and the indications are that they will go lower. But this is ho reason that they will stay at the ...
