Down in Arkansas they are beginning to realize some of the horrors of 'Radical rule," of which we read snch fearful prognostications in Democratic organs. Here is a report of resalts as given by a Helena paper: A few months of Radical, reign and alas for the evidence of gross misrule ! Several hundred free schools in opera tion, and buildings for several hundred more in process of construction ! What an imposition upon the people. One railway rapidly building, and several actually under contract. Immigration rapidly settling in, too, and horror of horrors ! alitor the Radical type m m A melancholy little incident is related of the ex-Empress Charlotte. This un fortunate Princess has been staying for some time at Spa. The other day she insisted with such vehemence on play ing at roulet that it was impossible to restrain her. A letter was written to Governor Harvey a few days ago by Senator Ross, suggesting the propriety and importance of gathering crop statistics from all sections of the State, for pub lication and distribution among the people east, and especially among im migrants. The Emporia News, Friday, : : September lO, 18G9, Tire Tomato Trade. Plenty of peo- . . . t Ele now in me prime 01 me can re merri er when ripo tomatoes were first offer ed for sale in oar public markets. They used to be raised to a very limited ex tent in American gardens, but were picked when errcen, and were converted Into a tolerably palatable pickle. Of course a few were ripened for the seed, and the unknown oldest inhabitant who first ate a ripe tomato must be classed with the adventurous follower of Cap tain John Smith, who first swallowed a raw oyBter. Several years ago an en terprising Yankee living in Hartford, Connecticut, conceived that ripe toma toes must be good for something, and made them the basis of a new pill, mak ing much money thereby, laying the foundation of a large fortune which he lately left. Thereafter ripe tomatoes were offered as food, and were much praised in the papers for their health giving qualities, though with every tomato-cater the taste must be ...
