Washington, June Ist.—Several clerks were dismissed from ihe post office department to-day. 1 learn that quite a number of the recently appointed clerks have been examined by the committee for that purpose, with referen«e to their qualifications, and have been dismissed in consequence of being found incompetent. Garnett tells us, "in favor of a still wi er eauge/'and if the contest lay between a gauge of 4:B} and 7 feet, as in the case of Brunei and Stevenson, there might be some reason in it. But why •crouch should be made to depend on three inches and a half we cannot imagine. The parliamentary commissioners, in attributing certain advantages to a tridt gauge, spoke of one 7 feet wide as compared with one of 4:81 inches. It i* hardly probable that they would have attributed such virtues to a 5 foot gauge. What intrinsic advantages does a 5 foot gauge possess over one of 4.8J ?
