An American citizen was lately notified by the French military authorities that he must attend a certain day at the office of the Prefect of the department in which he lived, to draw in the conscription for seven years' military service. Ho naturally resisted the demand, and was arrested and carried before a military tribunal on the grave charges of resistance to ami contempt of the law. Marshal Maynau was present in the court when the case came up. M. Uoussel, a Parisian lawyer, employed it)- the American, commenced his speech thus : ••Gentlemen: You have committed a most grave error in arresting my client. He is not only a citizen, but was born a citizen of the government which of all others protects with the most energy and the most jealousy its subjects,-whether in Europe or elsewhere—whether they be full or only partial subjects. I warn you, also, that of all the legations of the I'jjited States in lvirope. that of Paris is the most sensitive to the rights of its people." This ...

A Democratic BlgrapHlcal Continuation. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 17 March 1860

A Democratic BlgrapHlcal Continuation. Our worth}- and corpulant friend of the Express, being himself in candidacy foi Aldermanic position, justifiably allows himself to exhibit so much anti-demo-cratic diffidence, as to omit a biographical sketch of himself, while relating the history of other nominees of his party. As equalizing the matter between himself and fellow candidates for position at the Council Board, he suppresses their histories also. When the light of day lirst broke upon the vision of W. l\ Weak#, now candidate for the responsible position of Alderman from the First ward, little did he expect, we may confidently remark, to ever be placed in that high and enviable position. While yet his young lungs were scarce accustomed to the exercise ot breathing, his inhalations and exhalations ...

PreKiriciMlnl Dniiocrutic Sign*. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 17 March 1860

PreKiriciMlnl Dniiocrutic Sign*. We are standing away outside of the political prize ring, and have only the same .-ort of right to express opinions concerning the progress of the tight that would accrue to us were we witnessing ; the piinimclliugs of lleenan and Savers, and the conduct of their seconds and bottle holders. With no disposition to so take sides in favor of either party as to lay ourself liable to a pummelling from any of them, or to so involve ourself as to be considered as a backer of cither of the contestants, we take the liberty given us as reporters id' the general course of human events, to make mention of the progress of the battle inside of the Democratic ropes, just as we think it is going. To begin our report with the "round'' nearest to observation, we may say, after the manner of "Hell's bile,'' that the "mill" for "lirsl blood " in California, has resulted in vigorous and fancy spurrill, out of which no decisive result has come. Dickinson was put into the ...
