Influence of Ip-litiKureVjion tlio Umrrnl IliteHoli of (lie Fci)|ili'. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 25 January 1855

Influence of Ip-litiKureVjion tlio Umrrnl IliteHoli of (lie Fci)|ili'. The intrinsic ana comparative importance of agriculture and kindred pursuits will be more justly appreciated, when the generosity of thinkiug men shall have duly considered its influence upon the Social, Civil aud Pecuniary interests of the American people. The civilization of the soil is eminently peaceful. and tranquiliziug. in its effects—conducing to the promotion of health, and to the augmentation of happiness. Of course this is said in reference to those who know how to think, how to labor and how to enjoy. But we can never realize the peaceful influence of rural employments, until we have been abroad, into the great busy world, to observe the fierce conflicts of antagonistic interests, the stern grappling of mind with mind, the overweening love of gain, the petty tricks of trade, the low resorts of meanness, or the hazardous schemes of reckless villainy, which contaminate and curse the very atmosphere of'•...

ItuuvtuMiu iiiitivt utniMK-— >J<nu rurmrr. Anytlan Fnlnco. Assyrian falacc*. Mr. Layard thus graphically- describes the spectacle which, in days of old, met the eye of those who entered the abode of the Assyrian kiugs: ••He was ushered.in [through the portal guarded by the colossal lions or bulls of white alabaster.— In the first hall he found himself surrounded by the sculptured records of the empire. Battles, sieges, triumphs, the exploits of the chase, the ceremonies of religion, were portrayed on the walls—sculptured in alabaster, and painted in gorgeous colors. Under each picture were engraved, in characters filled up with bright coppei, inscriptions describing the scenes represented. Above the sculptures were painted other events—the king. attended by -his vmiuohsaHd warders, receiving his prisoners, entering into alliances with i other monarch?, or performing some sacred duty. The representations were enclosed in colored borders of elaborate and elegant ...

The Rocky Cnnoii Trnfjcdy once More. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 25 January 1855

The Rocky Cnnoii Trnfjcdy once More. Tin; Mountain Democrat jTlaoerrille) publishes the following letter from Capt. Davis, the hero of the twonty-seven-bullet-and-cloyen-men-slain story. If the whole affair he a humbug'—a " sell,"' as fast people would call it, or a " lie,as alow folk would name it—the redoubtable Captain. is pleased to persist in his statements. There is nothing liko sticking to a thing, Right or wrong—stick to it. Thus consistency aud the admiration of others ure gained, The Democrat says that the Baron Munch —Capt. Davis, we mean, has requested it to sta.to that, if therebejj,uy persons still skeptical, he, the Captain, stands prepared to take them to the uppt where the fight took place, and show Ihein the graves of the robbers, as well as those of his unfortunate companions, Dr. Sparks aijd M. A Hap at the Women I [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 25 January 1855

A Hap at the Women I J\ it up ni iiif u oim-ii i The Chnmbcrsburg Whig thus castigntce the gentler sex: •' But," respond the ladies, " hare you nothing to say of the growing follies ot men? —of your tobacco-chewing, smoking, drinking, indolent lords of cre:rtionV Certainly, we have, and do not start when we say that they owe much of it to Woman. We need but see the young men of a place to judge correctly of the tone of the femalo society, for in no instance do they fail to correspond. It is a painful retiexion, when we see the heroes of society in the midnight debauch, that such morals have "the high sanction of Woman, that she on whom the crushing blow of intemperance has jgo often fallen, making her home desolate and her children beggars, can smile at the recital of a drunken frolic, and welcome to her society the muddy brain and unsteady nerves which have just been sobered. We involuntarily think ot Woman, too, when we hear thclprofano oath and obscene jest of those whorauk high ...

Wagon lloada. liaa )utan lirrta Anil mrvntlr [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 25 January 1855

Wagon Roads. <> There has been large and enthusiastic meetings held in San Francisco, Sacramento, Stockton, and many other places, to devise ways and means to establish a Wagon Road across the plains, connecting thereby the Valley of the Mississippi with California. Now we have no objection to advance to a Wagon Road if our Northern friends will so far divest themselves of sectional feeling, as to advocate the building of said road on the most practicable and feasible route, taking into consideration that the road should be constructed so as to be made available and secure for winter as well as summer travel. We can tell by straws which way the wind blows, and we are constrained to believe that the North are inclined to throw us off entirely, or at least keep the Southern portion of the State, if possible, in the back ground. ¶ The proposed route and for which the aid of the Western and South-Western States is solicited is from Independence to the Eastern limit...
