Outdoor Parlors. [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 22 September 1881

Outdoor Parlors. When I see a bouse in process of building, without liberal allowance for piazzas, 1 resent it as al most a personal injury, although there may be no resonable probab ability that I shall ever sit under that man's vine or fig tree. Thi vine, especially, would he altogether figurative witnout the materia] support of a veranda. As good a rule would be in building, first make your piazza, then attach a house to it, The indoor parlor is sure to be provided for with the usual amount of sofas and draperies, but the outdoor parlor is too often like a rent —the accident of the day. ''Shall we run out a railing here and a few steps, and have ft veranda?" asked paterfamilies in a dubious sort of way, and his wife usually assents, for she does not dislike the idea, although she would sooner part with this appendage than give up the valuable enclosure at the back of the kitchen, which is so particularly handy as a sort of a storehouse and a place for the doing of odd jobs. The e...

Uncle Sammy T. [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 22 September 1881

Uncle Sammy T. Speaking of bachelors, I suppose there is no other bachelor in New York who takes more solid comfort than Mr. Tilden. It seems rather odd that a man without a family and no apparent probability of changing his condition in tii.it respect, should crave so large and sumptuous a home. Mr. Tilden is credited in newspaper paragraphs with an income of $1,000 a day. I doubt that the figures go quite as high as that, but Mr. Tilden certainly needs a large income to live and entertain as he does. His mansion at Yonkers is an expensive establishment, but he spares no money to keep it in the best of order. As a bachelors home it would be pretty hard to equal in any part of the country. The alterations now going on in his city residence at Gramerey Park will cost a Bum that would at one time have been considered a nice fortune. The whole interior of the building he bought last spring adjoining the one occupied has been torn out. The handsome grounds in the rear are all torn up fo...

At one time there was a bad ease of Asiatic cholera in the hospital The doctors were certain the patient would die, but Bliss was confident that man would get well. Finding that Bliss took a great interest in the case, the house-surgeon set him to watch the patient and report symptoms. Bliss began his watch at 8 p. m. The bullitens he sent to the house-surgeon were as follows; 9 p. m.—The patient's condition has slightly changed since you saw him. Have administered two full doses of medecine prescribed, His pulse at present is 64, respiration 16, temperature 95, He refuses to take nourishment, but have poured three cups of beef tea down his throat, which has been retained. 10 p. m.—The patient is resting quietly, apparently much better. A slight convulsion was was noticed soon after the 9 o'clock report, since which he has seemed free...

His Honor and Itijah. "This 'ere man," eaid Bijah to his Honor as he brought out Alexander Martin, "tried to bribe me last night to let him out, and when that wouldn't work, he threatened my life and yours too." "How much did he offer you?" "Tvo shillings." "Aud you stood firm?" 1 Firm as a rock, your Honor." "Good ! you may consider yourself elevated to the top shelf of my estimation. How easy it would have been for you to have taken that money and skippedfor Europe and passed the remainder of your days in luxurious seclusion, and yet you turned your back on the temptation. Bijah, your conduct shall be reported to the Police Commissioners in glowing terms, and next winter you shall have the biggest pair of ear-muffs of any citizen in Detroit as a personal gift from me. So, Mr. Martin, you threetened our lives, eh? ! » "No, sir, I simply said that when I got out I would see about this." "Are you insane?" "No sir." "Well, then, be a little careful how you mako threats. You are charge...
