The thirteen community leaders, Bill Woo, BoBo Lang, Andy Yeh, Jane Gee, Hobert Joe, Herbert Gee, James King, Andy Lai, Gordon Gee, Rev. mm JANUARY 1985 & r£] 4(1 Southwest Chinese Journal PAGE 3 HOUSTON'S CHINESE AMERICANS: We've Got What It Takes U of H Student Dick H. Lew won 2nd prize in the essay contest sponsored by the Southwest Chinese Journal. Dick is the son of Mr. and Mrs.-Willie C. Lew. For nearly a century and a half, immigrants from around the world have come to the United States in search for a better life. From Ellis Island to Angel Island, they entered hoping for freedom and wealth Some were led to believe that the U.S. was the place that an individual could easily attain this "American dream " However, life for most of these foreigners was far from a "dream"—especially for the Chinese. Perhaps, one reason for the hardships encountered by the Chinese was their culture. The American public was naive in their understanding of Oriental customs, habits, and language Thus, the Chinese were cast as outsiders and usually stereotyped as gamblers, drug addicts, or shrewd peddlers. Their accomplishments in...

PAGE 6 Southwest Chinese Journal JANUARY 1985 The Messdge By June Dove Leong CHRISTIANS ARE NOT PERFECT . . . ONLY FORGIVEN. On the way to Methodist Hospital to register as a patient on the evening of December 26th, the above message appeared as a bumper sticker on the auto in front. The purpose of my visit to the hospital was one to determine a spot on my liver... whether benign or malignant. The printed words on the auto seem to speak as if from the Lord. In circumstances beyond one's control, one leaves a great deal in the hands of the Almighty... and the assurance that He will take care of you to provide the needs to face the future whatever it may hold . . . and one holds fast to one's faith when one must "look through a glass darkly." Daily daughter Tammy and her husband Ken sat prayerfully and attentively on the 8th floor of Methodist Hospital. First Methodist Disciples Class Sunday School teacher and Associate Pas- tor Dr. Strong, so befitting of his name, bright- ened the r...

JANUARY 1985 ^7 r£] Southwest Chinese Journal PAGE 7 The ascent and dissent of the Video Kid 10-year-old Jeffrey Yee is older and wiser By Patrick Andersen SAN FRANCISCO — The Video Kid learned a valuable lesson on life. 'Twould be a service to his brethren to convince them that fame is not as joyous as the simple pleasures of good fellowship with one's peers, but how many people will listen to advice like that -- especially from a 10-year-old? It was two years ago-- Dec. 5, 1982 - that an eight-year-old named Jeffrey Yee put his quarter into the Pac Man machine at Pier 39 and spent the next eight hours and 15 minutes racking up 6,131,940 points to become the Pac Man Champion of the world. Jeffrey was ecstatic at his fame. The young Chinatown re- sident got a congratulatory letter from President Ronald Reagan; the Guinness Book of World Records gave him prominent mention. And after Asian Week published an interview with the young champ, Jeffrey started getting calls from reporters o...

PAGE 8 v^7 r£) Southwest Chinese Journal JANUARY 1985 ]A CHINESE NEW YEAR Lunar New Year is the most colorful and important of China's festivals, observed from the 16th of the 12th month until the 15th of the new year. The Lunar New Year itself may occur as early as January 21 and as late as February 21. On the 16th day of the last month, business- men close their accounts and thank the gods for a prosperous year. Even their customers join in by paying their debts. Everyone wants to start the new year with a clean slate. On the 24th day of the 12th month, each household honors the Kitchen God: Legend has it that he returns to heaven at the end of each year to report on the family. It is the custom to make sure that he tells as little as possible or reports only good things. A special malt candy is smeared on the mouth of his image so that his lips will be sealed during the heavenly stay, or at least that only sweet words will emerge. Wine is offered to intoxicate him and lead him in...

Co-sponsored by the Asian American Bar Association, the Council of Asian American Organizations and the Japa- nese American Citizens League/Houston, Shi- moura's presentation focused on the specific facts of the Vincent Chin murder case, and the implications of the subsequent actions taken by the Detroit Asian American community, working within the judicial and political system to deal with the light sentences originally handed the attackers of Vincent Chin. Shimoura was one of the most active participants in the ACJ's role in the case. A multiple-screen video set-up enabled the siz- able audience to watch a series of videotapes of newscasts and spec...

JANUARY 1985 t£j $1 SouthweM Chinese Journal PAGE 11 MIDDLE AGE NUTRITION By Beverly lean Gor, MLS., R.D. FOOD FOR THOUGHT FOR FOLKS OVER FORTY: FATS & CHOLESTEROL Controversy still surrounds the fat and cholesterol—heart disease relationship but more and more people are cutting back on fatty foods for the health of their hearts. It is impossible for a balanced diet to be absolutely fat-free and fat is an essential nutrient. From it we get fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and fatty acids that our body needs. But the majority of the population gets more than enough fat from their diets. In fact, in the common American diet, 45% of the calories come from fat, and medical experts are recommending we reduce this amount to 30-35% of our caloric intake. To reduce fat in your diet, what foods should you eat and which should you avoid7 In the milk group of foods, choose low-fat or skim milk products. Interestingly, buttermilk, although rich tasting is usually made from low-fat or skim...

PAGE 12 $1 Southwest Chinese Journal JANUARY 1985 Two Chinese American Women Break Free of Bond By Brent Staples CHICAGO — Growing up in China in the 1930s and '40s, Katherine Wei says she experienced "cultural abuse" that has haunted her throughout her life. Wei, 53, emigrated to the United States in 1949, at the time of the communist takeover. In Second Daughter (Little, Brown, $16.95), a book about her China years, Wei says the psychological abuse she suffered is common, particularly for "second daughters" — girl babies born to families that already had what was, in traditional Chinese terms, their fair share of girls. "All my life my mother told me I was a mistake and that I should have been a boy," Wei said. "She told me that so often that eventually I tried to pretend that I was invisible." Chinese culture long has valued male babies as sources of labor and devalued female children as unwanted responsi bilities. China recently invoked stringent population control methods, whic...
