^J|^^Octobei^5^006^JMie^University^News_ Commentary Esto Penelope! Heroine of the Core Have you ever wondered who is the most heroic of all the char- acters in UD's core? It's not Hector. Definitely not Achilleus or Odysseus, and certainly not Henry Adams or James Joyce. The most heroic is Penelope!! Hector is virtuous, yet his desire for a personal fame takes precedence over love of his family. Homer uses Achilleus to show the calamity that results when one cannot control his emotions, and Odysseus to show the misfortune of greed. Adams and Joyce are not heroic; rather they are used in the core as examples of obscure writing. Hector is not the most heroic because at the end of The Iliad he shows selfish motives for fighting Achilleus. Though Hec- tor's family pleads with him not to fight he leaves his wife and child to preserve his reputation, as he says, "I feel shame before the Tro- jans and the Trojan women with trailing robes.. .it would be much better at that time to go agains...

^ctober^25^006^he^Umversity^New Commentary One Bad Mother: Pop Culture Adopts Magnanimity, Controversy Michael McMahon COMMENTARY EDITOR I I get the feeling that this col- umn is starting to beat a dead horse. I want to keep people reading, you know, so I've got J to diversify. So I'll be hanging up the usual Congress-is-full- o'idiots line. I'm moving on, however briefly. Yes ma'am, moving on to the greener, more easily lampooned pasture of pop culture. I'll say one thing first: like our culture and if you don't, well, my friend, you're living in the wrong nation. I like that I can buy cheap stuff from Wal- Mart. I like that I can go see ■ Jackass 2, then come home and watch Nip/Tuck. Tomor- row, I just might buy a Justin fimberlake CD, save it to my computer and forget about it. I do, because Prince — it's something to marvel at. I can. And because its fun. Lots of fun. Fun. Fun. Fun. Ah, the revolutionary glory of capitalism. Everything, any- time, and for sale! So with my loyalt...

J^^^October^5^006^The^Univers^ Commentary Califorrrnia Conspiracy Theory Teacher Loving One's Enemy Taken Too Far Blennet Rawicki CONTRIBUTOR Sometimes I feel ashamed to say I am from California. Not California itself, but rather the "Califorrrrnia" referenced in Re- member the Titans that portrays us as free-spirited hippies and surfers who espouse the legaliza- tion of same-sex marriage and the widespread use of "medical" marijuana. Well, Califorrrrnia has struck again. Dr. Kevin Bar- rett was educated at San Francisco State, and is now a professor of Islam at the University of Wis- consin. He believes and teaches that 9/11 "had nothing to do with Islam" and was organized by the U.S. government as part of an elaborate plan to wage global war against Muslims. Although he has not received any accolades from his conspiracy theories, and is said to spend his breaks hiding under his desk because of disdain from his faculty peers, he is still teaching. It gets worse. Not only does it se...

JDctober^5^006^The^JlnM^^ Know Your Body "Chastity is not threatened by knowledge of your own body." Drew Johnson Letters to the Editor A certain controversy has been heavily discussed over the past few weeks, both in print and in person, whether at the Cap Bar or behind the Seniors'jail bars. The questions of censorship, women's health, and moral freedoms are proving to be battle grounds. I argue that the controversy itself must be set aside, as it will only deepen the wounds it has already caused. The issue, however, must not be disregarded in favor of maintaining the status quo.. or much worse the extremes of indifferentism and willed ignorance. I pose a new question for our liberally educated minds: how did such a minor thing as a medical chart become sensationalized into a university wide talking point? The pro-life bumper sticker I put on my door freshman year didn't make the news. But then that was in line with the Church's teaching, so that doesn't count. The sacrilegious an...

November 1, 2006 The University News Commentary Harold Ford, a "monster'' Michael McMahon A little housekeeping: Mr. Bennett Rawicki is a frequent contributor to this page. Time and time again we have misspelled his first name. Our apologies to Mr. Rawicki and any confused readers. Harold Ford, you sir, are a monster. Representative Ford comes from Tennessee and is now run- ning against a fine fellow named Bob Corker for a seat in the Sen- ate. Mr. Corker has raised an important issue in the campaign. An issue of real substance and im- port. This is the kind of issue that could make or break the election. What's more, this issue will have serious influence on other impor- tant issues like the war, terrorism, taxes, and education. The issue is this: did Harold Ford attend a Super Bowl party with... wait for it... Playboy models. Shock! Horror! And this man thinks he can get away with something like that and still serve in the Senate. Ooo, the gall! The worst part is that Ford even ad...

10 November 1, 2006 The University News Arts & Ent IN MEN Eastwood, Field, and Frears Lead Banner Movie Week FS Movie Reviewer Like Patton (1970), Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers (wide release) is an exercise in simultaneous mythologizing and demythologizing. Using the iconic photo of American servicemen raising Old Glory at Iwo Jima as a springboard, the picture both celebrates the courage of the combatants who took the island from entrenched Japanese forces, and portrays the exploitation of three of the flag-raising soldiers as crowd-pleasing props in a War Bond campaign back home. As with all of Eastwood's films, this one is intelligently, if not brilliantly made, juxtaposing intermittent scenes of the fighting, often brutal and graphic, with an account of the process of the bond drive, during which the men frequently express their justified discomfort at being hailed as heroes. Visually it has a convincing period feel, with battle sequences that are often very powerful...
