Hughes, a resident of Wylie for about 17 years, was killed in Norman, Okla., May 31. He was in Oklahoma supervising jobs for Wylie Plastering. He had worked for the plastering company for 19 years. According to police reports, Hughes was found dead in the park- ing lot of the Norman Guest Inn shortly before 5:30 a.m. May 31. Workers at a nearby Wal-Mart reported hearing a single gun shot and then a truck leaving (he motel parking lot. An article published in the Norman Transcript said Hughes had checked into the hotel the evening of May 30. Haynes Wylie turned in a gritty perfor- mance at their own 7-on-7 state qualifying tournament (SQT) Saturday, and earn an early berth in the state 7-on-7 tournament, despite a 39-31 loss to Piano East in the final game. The top two teams advance to the state tourney, which takes place July 14-15 at Texas A&M University. It was only Wylie's second tour- nament this season.
