NOTES FROM LILYDALE. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 16 May 1884

SNOTES FROM LILYDALE. BY A BILIous CONTRIBUTORn. Eastertide of eighteen hundred and eighty four has come and gone, and fortunately, as far as this neighbour hood is concerned, without accident to any of our numerous visitors.. The railway was the moans of bring ing to our doors quite a tidal wave of holiday seekers, and, of course, as is usual on such occasions, a large num ber of themn were armed with weapons of destruction. All sorts and conditions of men (and of women, too,) had their representatives here during the carnival. Our local hush birds muit have had timely' notice of the approach of the invading army I think, for they were notably conspicious by their absence during the holiday week, but now that the tired hunters have left the field our feathered neighbours may be seen fly ing about in their usual haunts. I had until quite recently. imagined that the present undoubted prosperity of Lilydale was in a great, measure owing to the opening of the railway, but it appears th...

BOARD FOR THE PROTECTION OF ABORIGINES. A meeting of the central board for the Protection of the Aborigines was held yesterday afternoon at the office of the board, in Temple court. There were present-- Mr. Charles M. Officer, M.L.A. (chairman), Mr. Le Souef, Mr.   Cameron, M.L.A., Mr. W. M'Credie,   Dr. Morrison and Captain Page. The secretary read an interesting letter which had been addressed to him by Mr. W. C. Morris, acting hon. secretary of the Church of England Mission to the Aborigines. It had reference prin- cipally to the intention of the Govern- ment of proclaiming a portion of Lake Tyers a forest reserve, and the effect it would have on the mission station and its occupants. The Bad and Worthless [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 23 May 1884

The Bad and Worthlessa are never imitated or countle-fitd. Tis is especially true of a family medicine, and it Li positive proof that the remedy imitiated is of the hiighest value. As soon as it had been tested and prvedl by the whole world that flop Ditters was the purest, best and most valuable family medlicin on earth, ninny imitations sprung up and began to steal the notices in which ther press and ther people of the country had expressed thie merits of H. B., and in every way trying to induce sufeuring Invalds to use their stuff instead, expecting to make money on the credit ant good name of H. B. Many others started nostrums put up in similar style to H. B., with variously devised names in which the word " Iop" or " Hops" were used in a way to induce people to believe they were the same as Hop Bitters. THE LITTLE 3MESSENGER? OF LOVE. By Lout B lI.cte. 'Twas a little sermon preachecla to me By a sweet, unconscaious child A baby girl scanre four ye~rs old, With blue eyes soft andl mild. It happened on a rainy day; 1, seatedl in a ar, Was thinking, as I neared my home, Of the continual jar And discord that pervade the air Of busy city life, Each caring but for "nutllmber onle," Sell-gain provoking strife. Tihe gloomy weather seeml! to cast On every face ca shade, But on one countenance were Iuned By sorrow deeply laid. With low-bowed ihead and hands clasplMd close, She sat, so poor and old, Nor seemed to heed the scornful glaucu From eyOe unkind and cold. I looked again. Oh, sweet indeed Thie sight that met my eyes I Sitting upon her mother's lap, With anby face so wise, Was a wee child with sunlly culrls, Ilue eyes, and dimpled chlin, Antl a young, pure, and loving heart Unstained as yet by sin.
