Northern Territory Times. PALMERSTON: SATURDAY, JAN. 16, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 16 January 1875

IJfotltltip l^rritorg SPime». I pAi¿n<fsTON : Saturday, Jan. 16, 1875. The difficulty of applying the Eng- lish law, with all it« forms and cere- monies, to the native tribes of Aus- tralia, has been well shown in the recent case of Regina v. Miranda. Here we find a lot of natives quarrel- ling- about some family matter-the death of a boy, it is said-and during the quarrel Kalunga (according to a portion of the evidence) throws a spear at Miranda, whereupon Miranda takes aim with a gun and shoots !N"ai«n«ru 'Wad. As all this occurred close to the town, and a part of it was witnessed by a white man, the police ure, of course, informed of the mutter, mid the law is set in motion just the same ¡is though a mun)cr had taken pine« amongst Europeans. Yet, at the same time, every one must sou that this quarrel is in its origin like most other quarrels which take place daily uinongst the aborigines, and that if it had not been tor the possession of a gun hy Miranda, the affair wo...

The Reptiles of Australia. SNAKES. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 16 January 1875

The Reptiles of Australia. By Gerard Krefft.   SNAKES. Twenty-one innocuous and forty two venomous snakes have been     described as inhabiting Australia up to 1869; since then about fifteen or twenty species, chiefly small veno- mous, but by no means dangerous snakes and a few harmless ones, have been added to our fauna. Of this number only five species are dangerous to man or the larger animals, and then only when adult or nearly so. During the months of   the year, from April to September,   they retire into the earth, so that   during the winter months we have   little to fear of these reptiles.   Nothing is so easy as to distinguish   the dangerous from the harmless     species by external characters, and     by a little attention to the subject this     can be done. There are three kin...

Mining Management. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 23 January 1875

Mining Management. To Till-: KlUTOIt. Sirr---The extract from the 'Ojtrrm lander -in your. lasL.issue is.a valuable_ one, and whether it makes much im- pression ot not on the persons chic M y addressed, contains truths worthy' their serious attention. Those who (io i*::it see the value of that paper ave the very persons who reijuire. its tcaching-s, and there is no doubt but we have still in the Territory men ( who have still in their hands valuable r ' mining property, and who under- stand but l'ttle about it, who would scorn to take its precepts as their guide. The thorough knowledge or how to ann,: successfully and profit- ably embraces besides that of prac- tical sinking, driving, and stbping, something of mechanics, hydraulics, chemistry, geology, and the strength of materials. The chemistry and geology, 1 consider, as applied to mining, includes mineralogy and metallurgy. The Queenslander seem to have preceded the South Australians in their mistake in the selection of "compete...

The Northern Territory Land Act. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 23 January 1875

The Northern Territory Land I Act. .4 TO THIS .EUlTOlt. Sir-As the gtautatiou clauses of th-j Land Act will he inoperative after tit*; 1st of January,. 1876, and as the publie have been unable to avail themselves of those clauses before the 4th of the present month, it may fairly be pre- sumed that some legislation will take place on our land law during the ensuing session of Parliament. Assuming su» h action, 1 am desirous of pointing out. a few matters in connection with the Act that if altered may be considered an improvement. I shirk no-'responsibility in reference to the present 'measure, as it was well understood that any Land Act eould not bo otherwise than of a tenta- tive character under the then unsettled state of affairs. We have all gained some practical experience, and are now in a better position to indicate where changes may be made with advantage. A discus- sion of the land question at the prosent timo through your columns may elicit opinions whichniay result in much...

Hospital Burials. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 23 January 1875

Hospital Burials. TO THE EDITOR. Sir-It was stated hy the Rev. Mr. Bogle at the Hospital Committee meeting recently, that a second case had occurred in which a patient who had died at the Hospital had been buried without any religious service being read at the grave. This is strange, considering the promi- nence which was given to the last case, only a few weeks ago ; and it seems like a desire to set public opinion at defiance, and to outrage people's feelings as much possible.   Your readers well know that even the savages of the desert respect their dead, according to the knowledge which they possess ; and yet in this civilized commu- nity men who die as Christians are buried ukc dogs. There can be no excuse for this,   because,. although there is only one ÍMinster of religion here, it is at all times easy to find a person suitable and willing to read the burial service at the grave of any person dying at the Hospital.
