RELIGIOUS BIGOTRY [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian — 7 April 1864

BELIGIOUS BIGOTBY. Srft, — The writer for the Courier stated through that journal ou Tuesday last, that ' religious bigotry exists even in this young colony,' was confessing his own fault. Ont of a case where there is no evidence of departure from duty, or even knowledge oftlie circumstances, the writer shows his ignorance and predispesition to tbe vice be discovers, by drawing a lane conclusion from defective premises. A Mr. Thomas, who was a Protestant, dies sud denly: his wife, who is a Boman Catholic, has a grave opened fur his remains in die portion of tbe Cemetery appropriated .to tlie members of Ler Church. The funeral takes place, and there is no clergyman to read the service ; out of this circumstance an endeavor is made to create a bigotry sen sation, asd find &nlt with the Catholic clergy. A little reflection will con vince any right - minded person that the Catholic clergy acted with propriety in ^l»t-Uu-ir (^'idnir^o. wjtK Jtb* burial of a member of another comm...

CORRESPONDENCE MR. FITZGIBBON'S ESTIMATE FOR THE BRIDGE. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian — 7 April 1864

COBEESPONDBKTCB . MB. FITZGIBBOITS ESTIMATE FOB THE BBIDGEL Snt, — Tsecliy yonr report of the proceed ings of the Municipal Council of Brisbane published in your last issue, that Mr. A. Fitzgibbon has made bis appearance once more in the most gratuitously offensive manner to other members of the profession and, I believe in one, altogether beyond the limitations properly improved upon hini by the nature of the office be holds. He is Commissioner of Bailways — a nntlic officer — paid in some way or other for_the per formance of his duties as such, and he has no more right to interfere with the practice of gentlemen, who have only their general ability to depend npon, than I have to sug and appoint the modest volunteer fntuotr place. But it is not to dilate npon the duties of professional men towards each other that I now trouble you, I have merely to make a few observations upon the estimate sent in by Mr. Fitzqibbon, and upon the des criptive comments which accompany it.
