ELECTRIC LIGHT REFEREN DUM, To the Editor. Sir. — In your issue of Saturday last there appears an article, under the above heading, evidently contributed by some one very anxious to see the loan sanctioned by the ratepayers. The article says that those opposed to the mechanical stokers appeared to be very unhappy in the position as sumed. How did the writer get this idea into his head ? Leaving out the Councillors and Mr Phillips, all of whom are naturally anxious for the loan, there were four speakers against the proposition, viz f — Messrs Geo. Clarke, Arthur North, J. G. Baldock, and myself, who put up a fairly strong fight to try and get expert evidence as to the practicability of getting producer' gas as the power iplant for our electric light station. Certainly, Mr Clarke turned round and seconded the motion in favor of the loan that the property owners approva of the loan. DISASTROUS FIRE IN MELBOURNE. - . ? -$ ? Melbourne. November 18. One of the most disastrous fires which have occurred in Melbourne for many years broke out shortly be fore 1 a.m. today in Lonsdale Street, West, off Exhibition Street , jn the premises belonging to Hickmer and Sons, Picture, Frame and Moulding Manufacturers. A remarkable feat ure of the fire was the extraordinary manner in which the flames mouuted from the basement of the ground floor to the summit of the building, an im posing structure of five stories. The damage caused by fire has been es timated at £30,000.

Balingup to try con clusions with a team from the local club, captained by J. L. Rose. The weather was perfect and a most interesting game resulted, the issue being in doubt right to the very last, when Balingup lost the match by one run. A feature of the day's play was the excellent fielding of the visitors. Nannup went in first. The Welcome Home social and dance which was to have been held on the 22ndinst., has been postponed to the 27th inst. Obituary. — « — . MR WILLIAM WARD. One of the best known residents of Bunbury past away last week in the person of Mr William Ward. The deceased had spent his lifetime in this town and had been connected with the Bunbury Lumpers Union for many years. Many of his fellow workers paid the last tribute of res pect by following his remains to the Anglican portion of the New Cemet ery on Friday last, where the last services of the Church were read by the Rev R Coverbale. Amongst many floral tributes laid upon the grave were those from Harry, Alice and Julia, the_Lumpers Union, Mrs S M Dixon, Mrs S Wenn and family. The coffin was borne to the grave by comrades of the deceas ed. The funeral was carried out by Messrs W Brittarh and Son.

Vancouver, November 18 Professor Buray, an English pro fessor, who has spent 30 yeais in Russia, two years of which were under the Bolsheviks, and who was sentenced to death, when interviewed said that the condition of Russia is appalling, and it was impossible to exaggerate the position. Life was the cheapest thing in the country. Terrorism reigned everywhere.

Nothing of importance could be gleaned to-day regarding Mines industrial trouble, O le leading Union official, when spoken to, said tnere had been no change in position, neither had any meeting of Union been arranged to-day. Mr T Brad ley returned from Perth this morning In .conversation with a press repres entative this morning, a member of the staff of one of the leading mines expressed hfs opinion that the mines would not resume operations this year. . All the mines are paying their employees to-day fc- two or three shits worked at the-*6ginjing of the month. Mr Ross, secretary R.S.A., states that the guard of special police sworn in for purpose of maintaining order, as a result of recent disturb ances, has been reduced by half as everything is now quiet and orderly.

Soe-a! and Papsonal, A marriage that will oause consid erable interest among timber men, was celebrated at Bendigo, Viotoria, on 22nd ultimo, when the Rev. J, Worboys, of Brunswick, united Miss Stubbs with Mr W. Strike, of Green bushes. Mr Strike enlisted early in the war and joined the 28th Battalion. Prior to enlisting he was one of the most popular residents of the tinfields and carried on a successful business as sleeper contractor. Since his return, he has again followed this occupation. Miss Stubbs wore a very ? becoming costume of white garbardine and carried a lovely boquet with streamers of blue and white, her husband's battalion colours. The wedding marked a double union of the Strike-Stnbbs family and a mut ual niece _ of the bride and groom acted as bridesmaid, and wore a pretty costume of cream garbardine, her boquet being a mixture of pink carn ations and blue forget-me-nots. In the House of Commons, Lord Robert Oecil said it was difficult to exaggarate the gravity of the inter national situation i n Europe a t present. The reservations of the United States Senate, which had been provisionally accepted, and were so extensive as to almost amount to a repudiati on of the Covenant, which also meant the repudiation of the peace treaty. The position was most grave, but whatever happened, the League must continue, even though the United States deoided not to participate.
