Lesley's Luck. CHAPTER I.—Continued. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 9 October 1909

Lesley's Luck. CHAPTER I.— Continued. Perhaps Cartaret guessed her thoughts as they sat down, for he talked easily for a few minutes on indifferent topics, then bent forward and spoke earnestly. ' Lesley, I saw Mr. Lawsou on my way here ; of course I know that my cousin in- ' fpMiripri in nifiicp nrnner nrn vision for von — there must have been a later will. But in the meantime you must allow me to see that things are arranged on a proper basis for you. It is impossible for you to dream of living on a hundred a year !' Something in his tone touched Lesley on . her tender est point — she had pride, oh, plent}' of it, and she colored hotly now. ' I am quite satisfied,' she said, ' quite — and I could not think of accepting any thing at your hands. Pray don't think of such a thing. Why, lots of people are rich on a hundred a year.' Spring Fair at Woodford. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 9 October 1909

Spring Fair at Woodford. The promoters and workers of this most excellent Spring Fair have reason to be satisfied with the result, now that the full extent is known of receipts and expenditure. ' ; We believe that anticipations were fully realised, and this is a good deal to be thank-, ful for. Fully one hundred people were present at the opening on Friday afternoon, and the attendance in the evening, and on . Saturday was much greater. The Rev. T. F. Potts made the introductory remarks, saying he did not intend to make a long spieech, as he would leave Mr. Waterhouse to do that, but referred to the harmony and ,good feeling existing in the little church at Woodford, and while his connection with the people of Woodford had been very brief, only a few months, it had been very cor dial and pleasant, and he was sure their happy relations would exist in the future. G. J. Waterhouse, Esq., who was the life of the Fair, said that was the first Spring Fair they had ever held, and he hoped ...

From the Public Works Department re a grant to complete the work on Evan's Iyookout road, Blackheath, and stating the application would re ? ceive attention when it is known what amount Parliament will vote for the upkeep of the tourist' roads. The Engineer reported that the balance in hand is only £2\, from which has to be deducted about £6 for maintenance wages, leaving a nett balance of £15. With this little good can be done. The work most required is the formation of 10 chains near the Main Western road. The only complete remedy for this sandy patch will be to...

THE HOME PAGE The Etiquette of Proposals. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 9 October 1909

[?] By Myona. r The Etiquette of Proposals. In the1 old days when the daughters of a family were bond-slaves of their parents, and- were supposed to have no will of their .own in matrimonial or other matters (though wilfulness.was not infrequently betrayed), it was the rule that the permission of the parent or guardian should be obtained be fore a proposal of marriage was made to the ' girl herself. Though this course is still ..sumcLimcs j.uuuwcu, luuu suis c^^cpLiunai. To the average young man of the present ;day it would seem almost absurd to ask a parent' s permission to offer marriage to a .daughter before he had discovered whether that, daughter would be willing to incline , an ear to his suit. In cases of a marriage , of convenience the4old plan is very often followed) and it is probably better that it .should continue to be so, especially when the suitor is neither, young nor picturesque, ..as .occasionally happens. He may be very .rich; .and though all girls like 'having pl...
