TROUBLE IN THE, TRANSVAAL. At a mass meeting held in Johannesburg the British residents signed a petition for presentation to Queen Victoria, asking her Majesty to Beeure justice and protection for them against the intolerable oppression of the Transvaal authorities. Five thousand of the British marched to the residence of the Vice-Consul and presented the petition. The police did not intervene, although they had been strongly reinforced fiom Pretoria. The Transvaal authorities have complied with the demand by the British Agent for the punishment of the police officer respon sible for the death of a British subj' ct named Edgar, who was shot during a dis turbance which occurred outside his house. The original charge of murder had been reduced to one of ' culpable homicide,' but the supposed murderer has again been ar rested. Bail has also been refused. MILAN BREAD RIOTS. The Italian Government has received 250,000 post-cards from tbe public, petition ing the release of prisoners who were con victed of complicity in the Milan bread riots, fomented by Socialists in -May last. During the riots 300 persons were killed in two days. The prisoners included Signori DeanJreis nnd Tarnti, members of the Chamber of Deputies, who were each sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment. The Government has acknowledged the petitions by granting amnesties to many of the minor offenders,.
