The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1881. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 September 1881

THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 15, 1SS1. A URE.LT deal of disappointment was expressed by the ratepayers of the Eastern Ridings of the Buln Buln Shire, when it became known that the Commissioner of Public Works had failed to carry out his promise to linally settle the severance question on the 7th inst. After hearing.the depu tation, Mr. Young summed up in a lengthy speech, during the course of which he more than once alluded to the fact that he had been a Shire Councillor for 23 years, but after coin paring, in a jocular manner, thi Shire disputes to the early quarrels of some married couples, and expressaing the opinion that if two men ro lI on the same horse one must be behind the other, his intention being to exmnplify the idea that there must be a majority' on one side or the other in evecry Shire, he finally said that he was opposed to the severance, and would therefore make no order in favor of it. lie then gave the opposing parties omne friendly :udvice, which put us much in mind of wh...

BULN BULN SHIRE COUNCIL. SATURDAY, 10TH SEPTEMBER. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 September 1881

BULN BTULN SHIRE COUNCIL. SATURDYn , 1rOTl SEITEIBER. Present.-Cra. P. J. Smith, Gal lagher, D. Smith, Grant, Ould, Con nor, Irwin and Sullivan. The first business on the notice paper being the fixing of the Presidents allowance, Cr. P. Smith moved, antl Cr. Irwin seconded-" That the presi dent's allowance for the ensuing year be £25." Cr. Grant said he was sorry to see the spirit that had al ready been shown that day. As it had been decided in Melbourne that the eastern councillors had been in the wrong, why did they not come and meet like men. Regarding the £25 he wanted to know what it was for, as heo did not think that during the past year it had been spent for tho purpose for which it was intended. Cr. P. Smith threatened to leave the table if Cr. Grant pursued the line of speech he had cdmmneneed. Cr. Grant thought as a new councillor lie ought to be allowed a little latitude and as a new councillor he claimed the right to know how the money was to be spent. Cr. Sullivan moved...

NARRACAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 September 1881

NA RR.A CA N. (FROx OUR OWN CORRESPOSTENT.) The people here are greatly exercised in reference to railway communication. When the present Minister of IRail ways held oflice in the Service Ad. ministration he paid a visit to Nar racan, and appeared in favor of con structing a tramway along the Nar racan valley, and in fulfilment of a promise then made sent an Engineer to inspect the route, but the result of the general election then pending placed it out of his power to proceed further in the matter at that time. When Mr. Patterson, in the succeed ing Ministry, had his railway bill before parliament, which bill included a line to Mirboo, great efforts were made to hare the Narracan valley ex amined, with a view to getting tie line in that direction; a deputation waited on Mr. Patterson, who pro mised that an engineer should be sent up to inspect a route that would be pointed out by gentlemen resident in the locality, these gentlemen held themselves in readiness to accompany the engin...

OUR PATENT LAW. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 September 1881

OU t I''ATEN' IA \W. It must strike most people, at all acquainted with the subjec:t. as very singular that whilst so nimuh has been done in many directions for putting the manufaturing ilndustry of the colony on a solid and satisfactory basis, there i4 one in which it has been neglected. We allude to the h)acrr expenses connected with taking out patents for new invent ions and dis coveries in Victoria, whereby both are disconuraged and repressed, and its mannf:winring industry is to some ex tent interfered with. The number of applications for patents in this colony does not, on an average, exceed 150 a year, or about three a week, and yet no one calls in question the right of applicants to have the fruits of their brain power, or of what chance has thrown in their way. reserved by themselves for a reasonable time. But therm is a general belief among those nost skilled in such matters that the number of applications for patents in Victoria would be much larger than it is if more sat...

THE SNOWS OF THE BAW BAWS. A LEGEND OF WALHALLA. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 September 1881

TIHE SNOWS OF TIlE BAW RBAWS. A I.EOEND OP WALIHALTA. (By R) In one of those glorious antedelu vian epochs of our planet, ages before the days of Homer and the mysteries of Mount Olympus, that part of Aus tralia, now known as Gippslaud, wMas peopled by a noble and remarkable race of beings. But so remote was this time that all traces of their exist ence has been obliterated from the annals of mankind centuries since, beyond a few disjointed storioe that one or two of the more venerable aboriginals would inow and then tell to a "white man in the early days of our colony before tobacco and rum had quite corrupted and demoralized their unfortunate race." But these fail to fix the time or the remoteness of the events we speak of even ap proximately beyond that at the latest thcy nust h;.vo occurred in tVie early part of the peaceful reign of Saturn. The spot ghiefly occupied by this re-. nownod peopleo appears to have been that which is now included in the areas of the Shires of Narraca...

Themeet. inge are at present held in 4 building rented from one of our local publicans, at whatis, I suppose, a fair charge, but at present it is quite inadequate for the, purpose. The table ,requisite for the twel4e counoillors takes up so much room ?tha there is very little space left for those who are interested in the council's proceeding and desire to be present. Last summer tzheticrowd was often so gret that the doorway. would be blocked up and uot even standing room left inside. Now, Sir, -this could be esaly.ob viated, if the council would try and arrange with .the committee'of.the Mechanies' In stitute ,for the use of their very convenient hall. ONLY CHICKEN POX. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 22 September 1881

ONLY CHICKEN-POX. The alarm created yesterday by the an nouncement that small-pox had apparently broken out at Yackandandah may be con sidered atanend. The likelihoodofthe in telligence at the time was increased by the known facilities of communication between the portions of the North-Eastern district in which Yackandandahis situated and the, Murray river. There appears, however every reason to believethat thechild Teuby is simply affected with chicken-pox in an unusually violent form. Telegrams have been received. Iproving that it has not left its parents' house within the period in which infection was possible, and that it has not in any way been exposed to known contagion from any person likely to have been affected by the disease. Still more re assuring is the following telegram, received this morning from Dr. Mueller, the mcdical gentleman who has charge of the ease: "Child Tenby free from fever; eruption ceased; oldest vesicles getting yellow and covering with dark crust from...

TO THE RESIDENTS OF THE DISTRICT. PER FAVOR OF THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 22 September 1881

TO THE RESIDENTS OF THl? DIS TRICT. PEra aVOR OF TRS EDIO?r . LDlxs AND Guarrlrsws,-On behalf of the numerous children attending our State schools, I beg respectfully to ask your sym pathy. practically as weld as theoretically. The closing quarter of the year is just com mencing, and if by a little united effort on your part a few prizes could be offered in each .school, I am sure .t would be a good thing. There is a magic ring in the word " Prize." Perhaps many of us have known its full value when, in byegone days, our name has been called out at the " breaking up" festival, and 1before an admiring and applauding audience we have received a prize. The children around us here know little or nothing of these things, because we arve been too busy to think of it perhaps. In two or three schools near Drouin a few friends, mostly teachers, have thought of the little ones, but the effort has not been on a proper scale. Around each school a few interested gentlemen can be found who might g...
