NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER PRIZE SKETCH. HOW I LOST A FORTUNE. [Newspaper Article] — The North Queensland Register — 17 August 1892

iSOBTH QUEENSLAND SE0IBTES PRIZE SKETCH. HOW I LOST A FORTUNE. . (BY W. A- PEEKE.) Talk not of despotism ! mention tyrants and ! oppressors no more in my hearing! Go to, thou hard handed eon of toil and rejoice at thine escape from the evils which beset the man who most perforce keep a slavey. Some writer has stated a man's character is governed by his digestion ; here an appal ling vision rises before me of wild-eyed maniac men armed with carving knives, and flourish ing deadly bludgeons of home-baked breakfast rolls, wading knee-deep in the gore of slaughtered maids-of-all-work; the worm will turn, aye and rend the oppressor, the last straw will eventually break the cam Crash! By the immortal gods that girl of ours has fallen from the upper verandah and into the yard with the usual dull sickening thud. For one brief moment a shapeless something passed before my window, said a smothered groan proclaims the victim's fate- Why did she attempt to shake the bed clothes over the balcony...
