SORGHUM SACCHARATUM. (To the Editor of tho ' Illawarra Mercury.') Sir — As I possess n. small quantity of the seed of the above plant, perhaps it may be as well, in this way, to le, your readers know of it. Last year I received, 1 thinkt ten seeds from a friend in Kiama ; theso 1 planted in three holes, tho same way as maize is planted. Many of my friends ha 1 this plant out to them when growing, and will by this note be reminded of the circumstances. From i lie seeds planted I had as much as half a peck of seed. Part of it 1 have given away ; part of it I have bowii in drills, and tho rest I have by me, and will be happy to uivo small parcels of it to parties applying for it. The ' Sorghum' thus Hoticed, is tho common kind; not the finest recently imported into the neighboring oniony. Tho latter I have written for, and expect a sam ple of it very soon from Melbourne. In reference to the kind I grvw last year, I may state that it attained the usual height of maize, and in appearance...

[FROM A CORtF.arOKDF.NT.] We came in for a share of the raiu which fell tho early part of this month so freely, I believe pretty generally over the « hohp. district. Tlie crops are looking as well as can be expected under circumstances ; they might havo looked better, but no doubt the husbandman is thankful, because they might bo looking worse. Tho addition to two stores of sonio years standing, a gentleman from Kiama has a third, and a very substantial one, in course of erection ; and a fourth is resolved on, and I have reason to think tho building will soon be put in hand. A flour mill, which, with brother Jonathan's permission, may be set down as a good speck, is in rapid progress. We get the Mercury, that is those who know the luxury of a local paper get the Mercury, because they can't get on without it. The Debating Society mot at Terry's Meadows, on Friday last. The Australian Colonies. VICTORIA. [Newspaper Article] — Illawarra Mercury — 24 November 1856

The Australian Colonies.   VICTORIA. We have files of Victoria papers extending from the   10th to the17th instant. There are no items of par-   ticular importance, but we extract the following :—- Meeting of the new Parliament. — The Government are busy preparing the estimates. It does not say much for their diligence and dispatch that this important busi- ness still remains to be done. Unless ready when tho House meets, so us to get something done before tho termination of tho year thero will bo ground for grout dissatisfaction. The best proof that the Government are not sincere in deprecating party organisation is the faot that they are really organising a party themselves. They are abuut to call a meeting of their supporters iu order to lay the foundation of a ministerial party. The flfiti-miuisterialists intend pursuing the same course, nnd ? will hold a preliminary meeting in the course of tho ensuing week. — Age, Nov. 8. The Property Qua...

Tales and Sketches. BLACK THURSDAY. [Newspaper Article] — Illawarra Mercury — 1 December 1856

tfnlta ottit itefcjiEH. BLACK THURSDAY. ( From the Household Words.) As the voyager approaches the shores of Vic toria, the first welcome land which greets him, is the bold promontory of Cape Otway. If it be at night, the blaze from the light-house on its southern point sends him its cheering welcome for many a league across the ocean which he has so long traversed in expectation, and calls forth rapturous hurrahs from the throng of passengers who crowd to the forecastle. If it be day, the eye rests on its lofty forest hills with a quiet and singular delight. These heights fully respond to the ideal of a new land only recently peopled. Clothed with forests from the margin of the sea to their very summits, they realise vividly the ap proach to a vast region ef primaeval nature. The tall white stems of the gum-trees stand thickly side by side like so many hoary columns ; and here and there amongst them descend dark ravines; while piles of r.ocks on the heights, alternating with jagged...
