CLIFTON On Tuesday morning last, at one o'clock, a fire brok® out in the gro cery establishment of Mr. .las', ro bin, but, fortunately, beyond damag by water, there was not' much loss of- stock. Mrs. Mary Rees, who was at the premises at the rear of the store, happened to go out into the yard at the hour mentioned, when she Moticed ? the flames' I5he at. onno called Mr. R. Irving, managerof th» Clifton Newsagency, wh0 rushod in to the street and gave the alarm. The residents came to the scene in full force, and by dint of hard work and a plentifulsupply of wa ter, which was carried in buckets .and other utensils from the adjoin ing houses, succeeded in getting the flames under control in the course of half an hour. Mr. H. Caiger, store keeper, has a hose attached to the } water supply, and he gave the use of this to play on the roof of the burning buildi*g. NEWCASTLE NOTES Norman MacRae, an employee of Lymington Colliery, w,as struck on the back by a fall of coal while at work last Tuesday week. He was coaveyed to , his home, 'and imedicat aid was sent for. . A young miner, Alexander Baillie, and his mate were working in si bord at ,Aberdare colliery last wieek when a auantity of coal came away, striking Baillie on the back. Assis tance was at hand, and he Was quickly rescued and conveyed to hie home in May field-street. He is do ing as well as can be expected. John Smith, late manager of the . Government Savings Bank, was, at the Sessions last week, sentenced to two years' imprisonment for embez zlement. He had been drinking and : gambling.
