A VEXATIOUS DELAY. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 9 March 1883

A VEXATIOUS DELAY. Sib,— As I write the clock is striking the mid-day hour, and my office-messenger is on the threshholcl of my office ; with the announcement that the notice-board down the street does not disclose the fact that the Macedon, with the mails from Victoria and the other colonies, has yet left Albany,, not withstanding the fact that it is forty-two hours since the Siam arrived there. This is not the first time an absurdly long delay has occurred in the despatch of our coasting steamers from the Sound, and I fail to see that the public should be made to suffer. With myself it is a very serious matter. The Macedon cannot now reach' Fremantle before late on Sunday, and the mails for the colonies close early on Monday morning. Beplies to my correspondence, by that opportunity, seem now quite impossible. The despatch of the mails for the Australia, -under the circumstances, might be delayed till Monday evening. Thy Macedou has been lying at Albany ever since last Mon day, an...

The Daily News. FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 9 March 1883

FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1883. Not very long ago we spoke of the absolute necessity which, existed for the appointment of a skilled analyst — one capable of being able to pronounce authoritatively upon the existence or non-existence of blood stains— one able to demonstrate the presence of poison in the. human frame— or,, in other words, one who possesses abound, k no wledge of pathology- and~»AoxicplkJ \ ogy. Not only would the services of such a gentleman be invaluable in those unfortunate criminal cases which but too frequently occur, but such an appointment would really prove to be an actual benefit to the public at large, if he were appointed to also inspect food and drink sold by trades men, and were empowered to con* demn such as be found unfit for human consumption. Indeed it is high time that something should be done in this matter. The public are — not to ex aggerate in the slightest — being absolutely poisoned by the sale of noxious articles of diet. In the sale of stale fish and ...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. A BUSH SENTINEL. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 9 March 1883

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. A BUSH SENTINEL. ': ?' ' '? ? : ? ♦ ? ?:—-???? . - Sir,— Alas ! little do the settlers, their re presentatives, or the PresB trouble them selves about the capricious manner in which the colony is treated bv the Down mg-street authorities. After over fifty years' hard struggling, and just when there appears every prospect of a prosperous future, a damper is put on the colony and! it affairs by the announcement that a most; progressive Governor (Sir William Bobin son) is to be removed to another Governor ship before he had served half his time here — just as he had got public matters well in train; it was the same when, after putting in a couple of years -here, he was removed to Singapore. It makes very little difference, in the cose of, Colonies possessing Ministerial BesponsihUity, where the Governor is ; but since it is a fact that in a colony such as this is the Governor himself is the only person in it thafcis direct ly responsible for the management of its...

CRICKET. BY LONG-STOP. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 10 March 1883

CRICKET. By Long-Stop. From some cause or other very little in terest is taken in this manly game by the residents of our fair city ; notices of matches occasionally appear in some of the news papers, out tnere never seems to be suf ficient excitement to induce even a fair per centage of pleasure seekers to witness a friendly contest between the various Clubs, except on the occasion of the annual visit of the aboriginals from New Norcia. It may be said that the cricket is not ?' good enough. Well — if so, unless the public give their support the game will never be played as it ought to be. In the first place a pitch must be provided so that men can play with out risking their limbs as they do at present. If it were not for a few energetic individuals who continue to play, regardless of the many knocks and bruises they receive, by reason of the rough state of the ground, cricket — one of our manliest exercises — would be entirely neglected. Great praise is due to the few lovers of th...

ORIGINAL POETRY. ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE ZANSHLUAAN DISASTER. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 10 March 1883

ORIGINAL FOETRY. ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE ZANSHLUAAN DISASTER. Toll again your muffled bell, For the loyal and the brave, Who faithful fought and fell, On that day. When the wild barbarian might, The flower of Afric's warrior sons, Surrounding darkened all the height, Where they lay. The troops lay far toward the rear, Unready for the gathering storm, But Zula thousands still drew near, To mark th' array. ' Sound the alarm !' in front and rear, And flank, the encircling masses close, With answering war cries, hark ! hear The wild affray. Hear the artillery booming fast, See ! each shot a vista clears, 'Moiyah ! Hoo, Hoo I' J a ruse, 'tis past; See the vista close. What weird, unearthly sounds are . those, Deep-Bwelling on the noon-day breeze ?* The song of death ! the Zulas close, They close. The deadly assegais are flashing o'er the [strife, On high, all streaming with the crimson [tide, But nevermore shall &o\v the tide of life, Cut off that day. And many a home is touche...
