The Girl in the Next House. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Morning Post — 19 December 1907

The Girl in the Next House. I suppose I ought to hare been delighted when Uncle Gregory offered to have me as an inmate, giving me my board and lodgings for nothing, and as ho told my mother, " See to the young cub's manners and morals." My uncle's house was large, gloomy and of most unattractive appearance, but it rejoiced in a beautiful garden, and thither I was thankful 'to escape after a solemn meal, in which the great feature was the enormous quantity of china and plate and the small a'uonnt of food. My uncle had sustained in his youth what is known os a " disappointment," and it had had the effect upon him of making him object to all female society, except that of his phenomenally ugly housekeeper and two equally unattractive maids.' Certainly this garden, with the serene hush that brooded over it, was an improvement on my boarding house. I was just congratulat- ing myself upon the change, when a strange sound reached my ears. I stood motionless, listening. It seemed to come f...

TRIBUTES AND TRIBUTORS. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Morning Post — 19 December 1907

TRIBUTES AND TRUJUTORS^ An exceedingly interesting deflniti- ] on of a tributcr was given by Mr. Goninou, of Menzies, who attended the annual dinner of thc Mining Managers' Association of W.A. (In- corporated), held at Kalgoorlie re- cently. Inter alia, he said:-" I ven- ture to state that fully one-fourth of the miners in this und others of the Australian States, are always cn the look out for tribute blocks, and in many instances ? will deliberately throw up good positions on wages in order to try their luck at tributing or other prosjjccting work, and in many instances would prefer to pay a reasonable royalty than buy a block at a reasonab.e price. It must bc- admitted that the tributcr and prospector ai« a cluss of men whose value to the State isdiflicult to es- timate, having greater talents and higher aspirations than the ordinary miner, willing to stake his all, and very often his life, to enhance his own pros]>ectä with which are bound up the prospects of thc State in...
