Our New Zealand Letter. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 July 1896

Our New Zealand Letter. (prom our own correspondent.) We have had a mosb beautiful winter here up to the last week, when we got a severe south-east rain, which has been pretty general all through the country. In the North Island ; they have had rather heavy floods, but ? from the accounts to hand here has nob done much damage. Here it rained for a solid week without ceasing ; but ib was not a continual downpour, if it had been we should have bsen all carried out to sea. The rain fell fairly steady all the time, so that it gave the water courses a chance to cope with it, which they did without becoming very heavily I flooded. On the higher country it has left a good coating of snow, so that we may expect to get sharp frosts now for a bit. Up to the present the grass has not ceased to grow since we i got the autumn rains. The English grass paddocks are looking much greener now than they were last , September and October. The winter 4 up to now has been so mild that } many of the early...

One on the Old Man. A GOOD OLD STORY. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 July 1896

One on the Old Man. A GOOD OLD STORY. The captain of a certain large sail ing vessel is probably the mosb polite officer in the whole mercantile service. He has, however, a great idea of his importance, and loses no opportunity of impressing ib upon his crew. In particular, he insists upon being addressed ' Sir ' by everyone on board. One day a new hand joined the ship, and a short time after leav ing harbour, being a seasoned old salt, he was entrusted with the wheel. The captain came up and asked the usual question : ' How's her head ? ' ' Nor'-by-easb,' answered the old bar very gruffly. ' My man,' suavely answered the captain, ' on this crafb when one of the crew speaks to me he gives me a title of respect. Don't you think you might do so, too? Now, how's her head?' 'Nor'-by-east, I tell you,' shouted the tar, displaying nob a little irritation. ' I'm afraid you don't quite under stand me,' responded the captain good humouredly.
