Cuban War. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 April 1898

Cuban Wai*. If noth'ng more comes of the present war rumours they have been the cause of one good thing at least, that is the unmasking of the continental European governments as to their feeling towards the United States. The events of the last few weeks have fully developed that, beside England, the United States has no friend in all Europe, The anti-American and pro Spain movement emanates from anti-Semitic Austria. Germany as a matter :;f course hates and always has hated us says the 'Chicago Israelite' of March 19. Chevra Kadisha. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 April 1898

Chevra Kadisha. The Special Annual Service of the Chevra Kadisha was held on Sunday 26th February at the North Lon don Synagogue. The Rev. S. Munz officiated in an impressvie manner writes the ' Jewish Chroncile/' and the coral rendering of several penitential hymns en hanced the solemnity of the occassion. A special feature in connection with the Cnevra Kadisha is that all services are rendered gratuitously. The Rev. Julius A. Gouldstein delivered a thrilling and eloquent sermon, and took as his text : Ana Moses, the servant of God, died there.' He said : This is an epitah no tombtfone in the world can excel. Brief, but long enough to surpass all the stately obelisks crowded with the most glowing sentiments poet ever conceived the few simple words convey more praise, more recognition, than columns of noble verse. The servant of God, the trusted, tried, and valiant servant of God, died there. Moses the servant of God, the faithful, humble minister of God, whose life was given to the...

The Sydney Kosher Butchering Association, Ltd. AN APPEAL TO THE JEWS OF N.S.W. (Per favour of the Editor of the "Hebrew Standard") [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 April 1898

The Sydney Kosher Butchering Associa tion, Ltd. AN APPEAL TO THE JEWS OF N.S.W. (Per favour of the Editjr of the ' Hebrew Standard '] Ladies and Gentlemen : From circumstances that are in the possession of most of you fully 300 of our shares still remain unsold and the want of capital represented thereby is at the present moment seriously hampering the management. The Directors claim that in the face of an extra ordinary display of enmity — active and vicious — from persons whose sympathy and support they had a right to expect. Numbers of Jewish homes are now supplied with kosher meat for the first time for years. This one fart alnnp insrifips thft ftxistence of the Association. Without wishing to reflect on any one person we cannot blind ourselves to another fact. That Sydney, possessing as it does thousands of Jews, did not, until the opening of our premises contain one kosher but chery, while Melbourne already has four (4). Still another fact, that since the advent of our As soci...

NOTES AND COMMENTS [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 April 1898

NOTES AND COMMENTS The services at the Great Synagogue last Saturday were conducted by the Rev. J. H. Landau, (in the absence of the Rev. A. B. Davis in Melbourne.) assisted by the Rev. A. D. Wolinski. The Rev. J. H. Landau delivered a sermon at the conclusion of the service. Some better arrangement should be entered into for the prevention of the opening and shutting doors by children during the delivery of addresses. It is very hard on the speaker and is apt to cause annoyance and embarrasment. The Hon. Secretaries have decided to call in the card for the Louis Pulver Sydney Memorial by May lsts the date of the final meeting. Mr. S.. M. Steenbhom forwards the report of the Montefiore Home. We should feel obliged to Secre taries of Jewish Institutions if they would do like vise. We especially invite communications from the ' neighbouring colonies. The Hon. Secretaries of the Sydney Jewish Education-. Board's Ball have forwarded us tickets for disposal. If any are desirious of atten...

Kosher Butchery. To the Editor of the "Hebrew Standard." [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 April 1898

Kosher Butchery. To the Editor of the ' Hebrew Standard.' Dear Sir. — I have to thank you very much for inserting my letters on the above subject in last week's issue. In my last letter I referred to certain troubles that had occurred, and stated that if you would permit me I would enter more fully into details at some future time. The trouble consisted in the drivers getting drunk while in the discharge of their duties of delivering meat to their customers. These men had been selected from about fifty others, on the strength of their testimonials of previous good characters. I am credibly informed that they had— in vulgar parlance been '* got at.' One of the men actually admitted . a-, B much B I believe some doubt has been thrown on my B statement 'that an official of the Synagogue had pre- B judiced certain individuals, some of whom hadalready B applied for shares, while others had promised to do so B Don't let there be a mistake. I have positive evidence B that such was the cas~...
