WARREN. (FROM THE HERALD.) [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 30 May 1894

WAHBE1T. (FROM TOE HEUALD.) Lambikg is now over, and marking so far lias progress with satisfactory results. Feed and water aro every where in abundance, whilo the river, which on Monday unexpectedly rose 12 feet, owing to the violent thunder storms on Friday morning, is now slowly falling. No stock movements are reported, mustering being a most difficult work. On Wednesday night lost a dance took place at Shakespeare Hall, which was one of the most successful, and certainly the most picturesque ever held in Warren. It was a genuine bal masque, and is the first of the kind ever attempted here. About 100 visitors were present, and danoing was maintained with unexampled spirit till nearly Bunxise, 29 dances being exe cuted. The costumes worn were, in nearly every case, both pretty and clever, some exceptionally so. The gentlemen in the choice of dress and character, exercised quite as much ingenuity as the fairer sex, anonymity in many in stances being complete. When dancing began, an...

THE BOURKE SHOW. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 30 May 1894

TSS SO VTtKE SSO JT. The fihow which was hold last week, the first .since 1891, was, says the WESTBIIX HEBALD, aa success. TJie recent rains had put the district -in a good state, and stock generally were in good order. As a result both exhibits and visitors were able to travel, and the railway simply poured in visitors from all parts of the colony. Glorious weather prevailed throughout. The total number of exhibits was 1059, divided as follows : -Sheep 168, cattle 76, blood horses 31, draughts 34, trotters 23, hacks and light harness horses 194, miscellaneous 533. The Bhoep as a body were cer tainly equal to the exhibits of former years, but the cattle both in number and quality revealed a very painful falling off. The display of trotters aud jumpers was the finest ever seen on the show ground, some of the recognised best horses of the colony being present. It is gratifying to be able to report that though the judges' awards did not always meet with popular approval, still there wa...

RAGING SWEEPS. WE have boon requested to publish the following appeal from the Council of the Churches " to the Christian public of Now South Wales " : "Conscious of your interest in matters relitiug to the welfare of the community, and urged by a strong sense of duty, the Council of the Churches desires to draw your attention to a great, and it is to bo feared a growing evil, and that is the practice of gambling. " It is needleBS to say that the habit of gambling has established itself amongst all classes, and that its pernicious influence has (.pared neither age nor sex. Th? least part of the dumage done by it is the waste of the material resources of the country. The injury thus done it is for economists to consider. It is for us, as Christians, to recognise the spiritual mischief which ensues upon the relaxation of moral fibre caused by gambling. " But the point to which the Council of the Churches wishes to direct particular at tention is this: that if thu testimony of the Chur...
