MRS JORDAN, THE ACTRESS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 25 April 1868

MRS JORDAN, THE ACTRESS. Most eventful was the career of the unhappy Mrs Jordan. Comedy was her forte, fffhd she was as natural in it as Miss O'Neil was in tragedy. She drew crowded houses, and fascinated the public by her gaiety of humour, her sprightliness and grace, her pretty face anS delicate form. The Duke of Clarence, one of the handsome sons of George IIL, fell in love with her, when she "faas at the height of he!r fame, and in the bloom of youth. After a long series of flattering at tentions, he succeeded in carrying her off to his fine country-house in the environs of London, and made her the mistress of himself and his establish meat. For several years she con tinued her professional career, and paid her lover's debts with the-emolu ment. Her influence made him a domestic character, and a large family of children attached him to his home, and made the union seem like that of a married pair. After having several children she left the stage and de voted herself to the gover...

Alfred Hospital Fund, that gentleman M com pliance therewith fixed the meeting for Tuesday last, the 21st irist.; btit in con tradistinction to the other meetirig, ex pressive of the indignation of the inhabitants at the murderoiis attack on K.li.H. the Duke of Edinburgh, on this occasion there was a very meagre attdnjd ance, only thirteen persons altogether, including the chairman, were in the room. Those present, including the' chairman, were Messrs Wren, Seccombe, .Davis, Ritchie, Thomson, Berne, Beazley, Jaun cey, Davidson, Kerrison, Anderson, and Sharpe. CHEESE AND BUTTER FACTORIES. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 2 May 1868

CHEESE AND BUTTER FAC TORIES. (From the Australasian.) Even the Very best of ideas is Seldom adopted by those specially appealed to without reiteration and frequent repeti tion, therefore we must be excused for returning again and again to this subject until a commencement has been made here. And this time we will begin by appealing to the farmers' wives .and daughters, as they suffer most from the slavery of dairywork at hqme. If they only make up their minds for the change it will soon be brought about. Whether they originated the new system in Aineri j ca we do not know, but it was certainly, devised for their special benefit, and was gladly taken up by the farmers for, home considerations. In the long settled parts of the Eastern states, when the land is worked out tillage will not pay, but cftttle keeping does, and each farm can only be made to support a family by having dairy work carried out it to the fullest ex tent. Cbeese-tnaking is the great resource on all except the far...

BIOGRAPHY. No. 10. Lokd Robert Glive. Lord Robert Olive, of Pla^sy, was educated at several schools, but with so littfc success, that his father, despairing of his bebottiitig eminent in any profession, obtained him' a place as a writer in the Honitiriihle East-Ihdia Compan's service, -wa^'W^b at Styche, near Market Drayton, in Shropshire, 1725, Disgusted with this occupation, however, he quitted the desk in 1747, and entered the army, in which he go highly distinguished himself at the taking of a fort belonging to the rajah of Tanj ore, that he obtained the post of commissary-general. Si>on after wards, the French, under Dupleix, began to discover their ambitious designs on India, which rou3ed the jealous}' of the English, when war was entered upon, and when the genius of Clive had manyoppor tunities of displaying itself. The French ] aud their allies, however, gained numer ous advantages. In 1751, Triuchinopoly, j the seat of Ali Khan, the ally of the English, was besieged by t...

A SLAVE'S REVENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 2 May 1868

61C3 purchased a m ilatto, called Sara, who could reid and write, and was. much more intelligent than his class generally are, but whose numerous bad qualities, including thieving, ly ing, and drunkenness, induced the p\rty from whom Black Matt bought him to ask a very moderate price. Sam's new master used the lash pretty freely on the shoulders of the. slave, and Sam vowed to be revenged for the treatment he' had received. Black Matt, having done something to cure Sam of his bad qualities, shipped him, with a gang of slaves, to New Orleans, and on arriving at that port dressed Sam* up like a gentleman, and sent him on: shore to show himself off, the object being to get a high price for him as the body servant of some rich planter. During his stroll in the city, hearing a portly gentleman ex press a wish to purchase a good body servant, Sim went up to him, and, with an independent swagger, said, " My dear sir, I have got just the boy that will suit you." "Ha!" rejoined the planter, ...

CRICKET MATCH BETWEEN THE BEGA AND BOMBALA CLUBS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 2 May 1868

CRICKET MATCH BETWEEN THE1 BSXJA AND BOMBALA CLUBS. (From the Bombala Times.) The retnrn match between the above came off last Tuesday on the Flat. The weather was all that could be desired for playing cricket, and also for those who take an interest in this manly pastime to witness the contest, of which there were a goodly muster, among whom were a fair sprinkling of the fair Bex, whose pre sence on such occasions tends consider ably to enliven the pleasures of the day. As on the former occasion, it again falls to our lot to chronicle the signal defeat of the Bombalaites, although we must admit that their play was far su perior to what it was. when they met their friendly rivals at the willow in the previous match, while that of the Bega ites was equally so, although some of i their best players, who were unable to ' visit Bombala, were substituted by rather inferior batsmen. For this season, at least, the cricketers of this town must give in as second best to the Bega players, whi...
