Progress Association. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 17 December 1909

Progress Association. It would seem that the residents of Alexandra were content to live on year by year without any attempt to further the advancement or improvement of the town and district, judging by the little interest shown amongst the business people in responding to the notices sent out by Mr T. A. Fox asking them to attend a meeting for the purpose of forming a progress association. On the first occasion, there was some excuse, as the weather was most disagreeable, but the meeting was widely advertised for Wednesday ni2ht last, and the weather being favorable, there was no reast.n for non-attendance. Still, at the appointed time, there were only seven gentlemen present. It was decided to wait until the meeting of the sports committee was terminated, and at 1 o'clock, six gentle men from that body swelled the number to 13. but a large majority of the business people were absent. However, it was decided to go on with the meeting, and the convener, Mr Fox, explained to the mee...

THin Government Statistician has esti mated the total wheat yield for the harvest of 1909-1910 at. 28,535,250 bushels, or just about equal to the record crop of 1903. Such is the esti mate for Victoria, while it is even as bountiful in -the other States. It would appear that in addition to being the land of the Golden- Fleece, .Aus .tralit, is a country emninently-adapted for the production of the golden grain. This is all-the more tpparent' when we take into conpideration the area under cultivation and the harvest returns. The question as to whether the wheat supply of the world 'is not falling bc hind the dengand is causing no little anxiety to.the agricultural exports of the old world. . Their discussion on the subject neither cleared the way for further enlightenment nor shed any light upon the, question. Like many of our own conferences it ended in "smoke." The cultiv...
