This day fortnight we published die warning in nut It states how disastrous bad been ibe experience of about rooo emigrants who had been persuaded to go to Brazil in 1872 and 1873; tne agricultural enterprise upon which they had been induced to embark proved un successful. Sickness and death visited them; those who were able to do so came down to die capital in hope of ob taining assistance ; some of the widows and children were sent back to England ; others of the emigrants resorted to different settlements ; and her Majesty's Minister is still endeavouring to obtain from the Brazilian Government some assistance for those who remain. Having a responsible form of government, the Ministry there persists in declining rhe honour of accepting the white elephant which, in the case of Langalabalele, the Secretary of State for the Colonies desires to present -to them. Indeed, the whole policy of Earl 'Carnarvon in respect to this powerful chief is objectionable to the colonial government. They refuse to see the Governor of the sister colony of Natal humbled for crushing the power of Langalabalele, and witness that refractory chief brandish his knob-stick in defiance of civilised authority.
