The Western Champion. Vita sine literis mors est.' BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1880. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 1 September 1880

ik Hbsitqtt (^tampion. Vila titu: litcrii mart ett.' BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1,1880. IK the debate on tbe TnEAsunmi's Fi nancial Statement it appears to us at a distance* as if the Opposition really required more than the time they asked Tor to consider the proposals of the Government. Had there being anything in the statement which could have offered a mark against which Mr. GRIFFITH and his party might let fly their arrowB of opposition it would-have been discovered without much considera tion ; bat the proposals are so clear, so moderate, and so just, so much better indeed than even Mr. MCII,WRAITH'R supporters anticipated, that no flaw of any serious dimensions has boon detected by the opponents of the Ministry. The expenditure for tbe ensuing year is esti mated at £1,133,181, which, with the interest on debentures will amount to £1,089,982, and to provide for this it was incuftrbcnt upon tho Government to devise some means for increasing the revenue, which last year was ...

The Western Champion. Vita sine literis mors est. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1880. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 8 September 1880

Iftc Ifcteqit (pampjon. Vita fine Uteris mors est, SEPTEMBER S, ISBQ. Mn. O'SUI.I.IVAN'B motion for paying the expenses of members on our coasting steamers lias been agreed to by tlic Assembly, t'ucrc being only 18 dissent ients. Tbe discussion of the motion gave bon. gentlemen the opportunity of expressing tlicir opinions upon the pay ment of members question, and it is refreshing to notice that very few are in favor of this eminently colonial and democratic innovation. Those who have had opportunities of comparing the parliaments of the several colonics say that the Legislature of Queensland is in the foremost rank. This may be patriotism, bnt if all the drunkards, the scandal mongers, tbe foolish young men and the stupid old men, with the ignor ant men and the blustering obstinate men were left out, the Assembly would bo really a credit to the colony. This being the case, we do not exactly under stand how it could be improved by the payment of Members. It might cer tainly induce ...

RACECOURSE SWINDLES. TO THIS EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 8 September 1880

RACECOURSE SWINDLER. TO THIS EDITOR. Srn,-Your lending articlc of the IHth inpt., in referring to the iatc swtadlcK jxri^Kit rated on our local racecourse*, includes Aratmic in the number. I mn sorry for this and must protest against it, as I know that every mcc in Arauinc was run on its merits. The defeat of Beadsman here is easily acconuled fur. He wnsin very low condition when bu arrived, and tbc time for^ preparation was loo tbort to enable his trainer to get liim "til," Brownlow tried all be knew to win the Town VIMQ, and the marks of punishment which Marathon bore would convince any one who sow tbe race that it woa an honest one. Miiratbon wa« in splendid furm,^inii if' Beadsman could not beat him at weight for age he bad small ebuuee of doing so when conceding 201 bs. There was comparatively no betting on the Armoac course, certainly not sufficient to warrant anyone paying such a sum as would ensure Beadsman losing the race*, could he have won tliem.
