(Tlo the Editor.) Sin,-I Was present at two several suits against the " Portia Company," and am at a loss to understand the different views taken by the Bench on the same question. In the first nui, a suspension was effected by a party calling himself an ' Agent of the Company," and was ruled as boing no sus pension at all, na such can only be done by a Manager or Secretary, in accordance with the Bye Law. In the case heard on the 15th inst.. it was held that the suspension of the " Wellington Company," by "'1'. Kayser, as Agent" is legal. In neither case was the -arty styling himself " Agent" a share How can those decisions be reconciled? I am, Sir, &c., CURIOSITY.

Correspondence. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 23 December 1870

c irrrnpunhnure. ---"- (?'o the Editor.) Silt,-I was astonished to see through the issue of your colnm n a doubt existing as to who was the originator of the Limo and Sulphur cure for scab in sheep. The fact must be well known in M~anstield and surrounding districts, that Mr Ewen Tolhni was the first to practically experience, and prove its efficacy for.that scourge. I was shearing at Mr Tolmie's in 1865, in which year his sheep were scabby-wr also helped to dip them. The rroportions used by him were--2 ounces of each of the in gredients to the gallon of water, with which his sheep were cured, and remain so to the present day. I have also noticed by some of the Melbourne papers that the proportions given uro more than the above, which is a mistake. If 2 ounces of each provo a cure, what need is there to use more than that used by the originator? Yours reapectiully SHEAIRER.

I am sorry that I am still unable to give tile public any authentic information relative to the ntew "Organ," which is said to be about to delight and Instruct Mansfield and its surroundings. (To the Editor.) Sin,-With your permission I shall again revert to the doings of the Shire Council. 'Tho subject is not pleasant-quite the con trary, but as a matter of duty (which is not always agreeable), I again take up my pen. Follow ratepayers, it is not our fault that we are disfranchised-that we had no votes at the last election, but disfranchised we are, through the unseemingly proceedings at the late ljJvision Court, and as a result we have now the very questionable honour of a new President of the Shire Council, who, in that capacity is of course, the observed of all ob servers. I am sorry I cannot add the ad mired, for, truth to say, there is nothing admirable about him, excepting perhaps the cool effrontery, and dogged determination which he displays in heaping indignities whenever he can obtain the least chance, upon those who may have the misfortune to come under his ban or displeasure. I heard a hotel] keeper ask, some time ago, "why should the Secretary of the Counci...

PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY "?Verltas Vincit Onlu:la." FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1870. Socal and General News The Mansfield people are beginning to speak out like men who feel their freedom, and appreciate the known advantages of forming items in a British community. The meeting of ratepayers held for the purpose of criticising the acts of the Shire Council (a report of which will be found in another column), was addressed by men who evi dently understand the subject dealt with, and who are fearless of any consequences which may follow their just denunciations of the misdeeds of their representatives. The, charge of obtaining, illegally, excess of rates from ratepayers in the Mansfield Shire, and from the Government in the form of endowment on such excess, cropped up at the Court of inquiry before Mr Willoby, and on exposure of the untruthfulness of the correspondence and statements relating to the matter of separation of the slice of the Merton Riding of this shire, Dr Rowe packed off the Se...
