Rtid's Opinion of t,Ue • 'Great Poet's Character-He Pronoun- ce« Him a Man of Yirtne, Captain Mayne Beid, the celebrated au­ thor, delivered a lecture on Byron, last evening, at Steinway Hall, illustrating his theme fcy reciting some of the richest parts qf that great poet's works. This was the first occasion on which the Captain had ever appeared before a New York audience in the capacity of a public speaker, and considering his reputation as a novelist, he certainly deserved a larger attendance of our citizens than was present. The slim character of the audience may, however, be accounted for by the inclemency of the weather and the exhaustion of public pa­ tience by the interminable \"Byron Contro­ versy.\" v As a lecturer, Captain Reid proved hira- self a success.
