Is There Communism at Capital College? [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 4 February 1987

Is There Communism at Capital College? By Julie Larson To drink or not to drink, that is not the question. It is evident, whether you attribute it to moral erosion or modern culture, Capital students will drink. The philosophy is an old one, "I drink, therefore I am." The alcohol policy, implemented in the fall of '86, has taken a drastic toll on school sponsored campus activities. Dance attendance has declined from a romping 300 of last year, to a disappointing 50 of this year. Since no one caught their autumn buzz, the "Autumn Buzz fun", a tradition at Capital, seemed to change its tone this year, implying, "Autumn Wuzz fun - (last year)." So where are the students? It 'Seems that the social activities are now strictly private sector ordeals. Socialization is an integral cohesive force between students, students prefer to socialize at events with alcohol, and alcohol is not permitted at school sponsored activities. Therefore, we find students at private campus parties, T...

Do those Winter Blues Have You Down? [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 4 February 1987

Do those Winter Blues Have You Down? Counseling Center Offers Help By Vicki Koon Look inside the doorway and you will see blue and yellow beanbags stacked against one wall; a receptionist wedged between colors, smiling and eager to assist; on the wall, an uneven dual highway of green and yellow, which if you follow will lead you to a door covered with outrageous postcards and the largest geranium you will probably ever see. The sign over the doorway says, "Counseling Center." It is that and much more. Probably a more accurate title for this multipurpose office would be the "Personal Development Center," for everything that Marian Krieger and Ed Beck offer is geared toward growth and development. Whether you want to learn how to relax in stressful situations, learn how to study more effectively, become more assertive, get guidance in career or education goals, or just get personal counseling, Room W-117 is the place to go. Do you get so anxious when taking a test that you a...

Academic Integrity [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 4 February 1987

Academic Integrity (from p. 4) Although South maintains that the underlying assumption of the policy of academic integrity is that students are honest, he says that the initial responsibility of upholding the policy is the instructors'. Because the characteristics of individual courses differ, South encourages instructors to clarify, early in the semester, the policy's applications to their courses. He advises students first to have a clear commitment to learn, and, second, to understand the tenets of academic integrity. "If those two things were to happen, then there'd be no need for any concern with academic integrity-other than the presumption that it exists," South says. Finally, he reminds, "People, you are choosing to join this community. In so doing, you're making a conscious decision to accept the rules of this organization and to abide by them."

Student Court Clears Docket [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 4 February 1987

Student Court Clears Docket By Jan Trovers For any system of government, there must be a court which interprets the rules. So it is with the Student Court. The Student Court, judicial arm of the SGA, underwent a total change of personnel in October 1986. Under the direction of Chief Justice Todd Hammaker, the eight member court dealt with a large backlog of cases from Spring 1986. "We did a lot of work and put in long hours to catch up," said Hammaker. Presently, the court caseload deals primarily with traffic violations. Any student who receives a parking ticket has the option of filing an appeal form in Police Services. The appeal is forwarded to the Student Court. If the student wishes to appear in person, he is notified when his case will be reviewed. When the court has reached a decision, Police Services is informed whether the party is liable to pay the fine or has been exonerated. The decision is binding though a student has an option to reappeal under certain circums...

Spend the Summer in Italy Earning Credits [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 4 February 1987

Spend the Summer in Italy Earning Credits " A fantastic experience!" 'One of the highlights of my life!" "The best move I've ever hade!" "A time I'll never forget!" "Both enjoyable and instructive!" "I learned so much." These enthusiastic quotes were all comments made by students who participated in last summer's Penn State Education Abroad Program, 'Cultural Heritage and Italy Today." The seven-week program will be offered again this year--from June 12 to August 1. Todi, a small town in UmBria ("the closest thing to Paradise"), is the centrallylocated site of the course which features field trips to nearby locations as well as Florence, Venice and Rome. The program provides an introduction to the cultural and artistic heritage of Italy, especially in Umbria, one of the great centers of the Renaissance. Besides actual courses-taught by Penn State instructors and local experts—the educational experience is derived by cultural observation. As one participant says, "I was inc...

Dating Game to be Held in CUB [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 4 February 1987

Dating Game to be Held in CUB By Denise Reinas This semester, Penn State at Harrisburg is bringing the fun-filled excitement of the popular game show, "The Dating Game," right here to our campus. On Saturday, February 14th, at 7:30 p.m. in the CUB building, the fun will begin. The results of a program survey taken by the campus Resident Assistants showed that students were tired and bored with the usual activities, such as dances and movies. Therefore, the RAs decided to sponsor "The Dating Game." Previously, there was a smaller, less formal version of the game held in the dormitories. Because it was such a big success and because there was such a great turnout, the RAs decided to bring the game back, only in a bigger and better fashion. The game will be run exactly like "The Dating Game" is run on television. But in place of "The Dating Game's" Jim Lang, Resident Assistant Greg Rzeplinski will lead the fun. Approximately sixteen prizes will be given out. The prizes will b...

Fast Food Facts [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 4 February 1987

Fast Food Facts Can you afford to gain weight in college? If you've noticed your jeans are getting a little tight, perhaps it's time to examine your eating habits. Many Penn State students rely on fast food restaurants because they are conveniently located, have quick service and are relatively inexpensive. But watch out, because they can also be quite high in calories. The average woman needs about 2,000 calories per day while a man needs about 2,700 calories per day. If you don't choose fast foods carefully, you can easily eat more than half your daily calorie needs in one meal. Take a look at the following sample menu: Calories Whopper 670 Onion Rings 270 Soft Drink 144 Apple Turnover 345 TOTAL 1,429 Fast food has a high caloric value because of the way it is prepared. The sodium content is high, and because these foods are deep fried, they are more fattening. Although fast foods do contain nutrients from at least three of the four food groups, they are low in calcium, lo...

Angry Students Defend Individual Rights to Opinions [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 4 February 1987

Angry Students Defend Individual Rights to Opinions Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, . We would like to reply to the letters written by both Jean Eileen Withoft and Bill Eason. These letters referred to the letter, written by Christine Collins, concerning the attitudes of some of the administrative employees in the Olmsted Building. First, Jean Withoft stated in her letter that Ms. Collins has an unfortunate attitude. I don't believe that statement was anywhere fair, appropriate, or accurate. Ms. Collins was merely stating her own feelings and opinions, which we are all entitled to. Jean Withoft may believe that Ms. Collins has an unfortunate attitude, but she has in no way supported her argument with legitimate facts, thoughts and/or reasons. She merely put down Ms. Collins' attitude and hoped that others would agree with her statements. Next, in her letter, Jean Withoft mentioned that on occasion, when she used the service of the administrative offices in the Olmsted Buil...

Your responses in the last survey, though meager, were quite interesting. 70% of you didn't vote in the last election!! Your main reason for not voting was not being familiar with the issues or candidates. Your secondary reasons were "no stamps," "not registered in county," "too busy,""a-political," and "apathy." You are all looking to change professions or grow in your fields. You are all "always truthful" in answering a survey, except for one "never always-truth hurts." You averaged reading seven books last year, with some of your favorite books being nrpp.n F.gps and Ham. The Creation of the Panama Canal. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. A River Runs Thru It. and Slaughter House 5. Your favorite activities include backpacking, sex, needlework, and skiing. You want to see a bus for Capital College to all PSU football games next Fall. You want to see more surveys, more Faculty, Student, and Employee profiles, and you would like to see the problems of students 35 and old...
