Federal ' Aid to'Education . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886

Federal Aid toEducation . LETTER FROM SENATOR BLAIR . [ Having been Informed that there was opposition in the Southern States to the bill known as the Blair Education bill on the wound that it would tend to maintain the United States tax on liquors , to provide the requisite revenue , and hence would be against the temperance cause , we wrote to Senator Blair to ask what he had to say to meet such an objection . What to use in the hill is an important question , especially when some kind of cheap material is required . Superphosphate is usually resorted to , but it is not always profitable to use it in that manner . The best material is that recommended by us in a previous article , as composed of fine dirt or kainit saturated with urine , but where this is unobtainable , plaster in the hill is a cheap and good starter , but only when the land is rich , or a suitable fertilizer is broadcasted over the field . The kernel of the corn is endowed by nature with all the elements that sustain the plant in its first stages , and as soon , as the roots have established themselves they immediately search in every direction and appropriate plant food from the soil . Plaster , being slightly soluble in water , gives up lime to the plant , but it also attract...

Value of a Good Pasture . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886

Value of a Good Pasture . A eood dow demands a good pasture . Wavine been bred for a capacity to convert food into milk and butter she . must he provided with a sufficiency or she will prove a failure . The change of location will entirely alter the yield of a cow , and vet many ascribe the fault to the animal when the true cause is in the pasture . It was n long time before some sheep breeders discovered that the large breeds oould not exist on poor scanty pasturage , n it is no ...
