BUT AN EXCEPTION [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 15 February 1902

BUT AN EXCEPTION Montana People Dont Believe They Are in The Banana Belt . WILL BUY TEXAS CATTLE A Budget of Information Gleaned About the Stock Yards , We havent had such a winter out in Montana for 30 years said J . HI . Boardman of Helena who passed through yesterday on his way to New York . Of course sucli mild weather is exceptional and we have not jumped ; to the conclusion that Montana is in the banana belt but the open weather has carried cattle and sheep through in splendid condition . The serious problem facing ranchmen all winter has been the securing of a supply of stock water . There lias been no snow for the cattle to eat and all running water was frozen . Grass is plentiful but cattle must have water . Industrially Mr . Boardman says Montana is thriving , its population being to busy that it hasn t time to worry about other peoples troubles . Even the railway merger proposition has r . ol diverted their attention from business affairs and th 3 majority are not worryin...

Hobu Are They Mads ? [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 15 February 1902

Hobu Are They Mads ? DUE stock food tests that are to IDO conducted at Odebolt , Iowa , by Prof . Cnrtiss will be closely watched , hy the entire cattle-feeding fraternity . Practically speaking , these stock foods all possess meat . Feeders recognize the necessity of maintaining thrift in animals on full feed , but an excess of carbonaceous food has the opposite effect . In compounding their mixtures stock-food men have taken advantage of the properties of certain chemicals . They have mixed ingredients of small value and retailed the result to farmers at profits varying from 100 to 1000 per cent . Of course the feeder has realized some benefit from the use of these foods . Many use them regularly aud the average cattle feeder is no fool . On the contrary he looks for immediate results and is not likely to make repeated purchases of an article from whicli he derived no benefit . A stockyards man who has and is feeding thousands of cattle assures the Live Stock World that he compoun...

Sa <* Je the Kindergartens . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 15 February 1902

\ Sa <* Je the Kindergartens . CSHOUGHTFUL people recognize the £ 1 kindergarten to be the foundation of our educational system . Also , that very few of the children attending the public school kindergartens ever reach the liieTi schools , and that it is our duty to give such children every possible advantage offered by our public schools . The proposed plan of closing the Chicago kindergartens on account of lack of school funds is certainly a groat mistake . It would be far better to close the high schools than the kindergartens . It is a burning disgrace , however , that there should be any danger of any part of our educational system being closed even for a short time . o The X . I . T . ranch has lost its distinction of being the largest in the world , 1 , 000 , 000 acres in tracts of varying size having been sold from it during the last two years . This is the ultimate fate of all the large land holdings .

Open the 'Reservation . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 15 February 1902

Open the Reservation . rajFFORTS of the Minnesota legislators IS to secure the opening of the huge Chippewa reservation in the northwestern part of the state bid fair to meet success at an early date . A correspondent of the Live Stock World writing from Crookston , Minn ., says this reservation is not only well watered and timbered , but contains some of the finest prairie lands in the state . It is located close to the head of Lake Superior , and will make an ideal stock country . At present a mere handful of redskins are in possession and settlement would work no hardship to them . By all means let the Chippewa reservation be opened without delay .

Roosevelt Is Well Posted . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 15 February 1902

Roosevelt Is Well Posted . President W . L . Grubb of the Colorado Cattle and Horse Growers Association , tells the Kecoru-Stockmau of his recent interview with President Roosevelt , and says he found him well posted on existing conditions in Colorado . He said : I spo !< e to him in the interest of the small stock farmer who is very much opposed to the Bowersock bill now pending in Congress . The President assured me most emphatically that any measure that did not make ample provisions for the protection of the herds of small farmers would never receive his approval and that he . would always give the interests of this class of stockmen special and careful consideration . I had talks with a number of congressmen and senators and I am convinced that no leasing biil will be able to pass the ureser . t sesaion and none of the bills that have been presented stand a ghost of a show cither from this or subsequent sessions . The destruction of winter grazing seems to be tho bon...

AN ANCIENT MAP [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 15 February 1902

AN ANCIENT MAP It Shows How Iowa Was Laid Out Half a Century Ago . What is without doubt one of the oldost maps of the sVatc of Iowa in existence was recently discovered in the free library in Fort Dodge . It is contained in a book entitled Sargent s Notes on Iowa , and bears the date of 1 S 13 . Tiie book was issued by the Arm of Cook & Sargent , dealers in lands , and was evidently intended as what would in modern times be termed a prospectus , for the purpose of attracting settlers to this in : w territory . The map , which is naturally the most interesting part of the b . iokto modern readers , shows only one-half printed , the remainder being cirei iily drawn out , and the names of thj counties filled in in ink . The printed portion or the map embraces the southern tier of c mntiw . and then bran : ; hc 3 away in a nui-tlt-.-i .-lei-ly direction including Tin -lis , n . io .-..-.
