No Discarded or Abandoned Inventions of its Beaten Competitors are used in THE IMPROVED UNITED STATES SEPARATORS THE UNITED 8 TATES SEPARATORS ARE IN A CLASS BY THEMSELVES The United States use inventions of their own exchuivriy . The United States do not utilize any type of separator ever developed by their Would-be Competitor * . These Would-be Competitors * claim that Dr . DeLaval was the inventor of the first practical continuous flow centrifugal Cream Separator , his application being filed July 31 , 1879 , Patent issued , No . 247 , 804 , Oct . 4 , 1881 . This statement is not true as shown by the records in the Patent Office . Messrs . Houston & Thomson ( who afterward became famous in the electrical line ) were the first to be awarded a patent on such an apparatus . Application filed Oct . 29 , 1877 . Patent issued April 5 , 1881 , No . 239 , 659 . This Houston & Thomson Separator was also of the Bevel Gear type and was for either hand or power , ther...

ALL . AROUND THE FARM '¦ emmmmmmmmms 1 emmmsm ^ . E * sE ^ [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 April 1909

ALL . AROUND THE FARM ¦ emmmmmmmmms 1 emmmsm ^ . E * sE ^ BUSHING OVER GRASS LAND By Wm . H . Smith The question of burning surplus dead grass and weeds on old pastures on stock farms is very much discussed . The question of burning meadows that have not been seeded very long also comes up for consideration occasionally . it does not hurt either meadow or pasture that has more or less trash on it to burn it off before the frost goes out of the ground ; in fact , it is helpful rather than otherwise . But if any of our readers should undertake to burn this trash off after the clover has started to grow , or after the frost is out of the ground , they ¦ will regret it . Neither timothy nor blue grass suffers as much harm by burning under these conditions as clover , but we have never yet seen a field with young clover in it burned over in the spring that did not suffer more or less damage . We once had a fire run up a slough on a neighbor s farm and get into our clover field sown the y...

IAProblem Solved * [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 April 1909

IAProblem Solved * VOLUME for volume , this rural gas actually gives twelve times more light than the best city gas . Like city gas , it is used in nandsome brass or bronze chandeliers and fixtures of endless variety . A simple twist of the wrist turns on a brilliant flood of light in any room in the house , day or night . It has already driven the oil lamp with its grease , smoke , soot and smell , out of 176 , 000 town and suburban homes . Takes some member of every one of these 176 , 000 homes , fifteen minutes once a month , to make all the gas the household can use . * * * The magic is all in the wonderful gasproducing stone . t This stone is manufactured m huge electric furnaces , in a temperature of over 6 , 000 degrees Fahrenheit . When ready to use , it looks and feels like crushed granite and is then known as Union Carbide . Union Carbide is packed at the factory and distributed throug h warehouses all over the country in sheet steel cans in which it may be kept for y 3 ar...

SABDBRS Dutch Belted Cattle are known in Holland as Lakenvelders , or Veldlarkers , which means literally a field of white , but conveys the idea of a white body with black ends . The early history of this breed is not fully understood , but from the records obtainable , and from conversation with several of the older breeders in Holland , it seems that these cattle began to nourish about 1750 , and no doubt the system of selection by which this mar velous color breeding was attained dates back into the seventeenth century . Lakenvelder poultry of England and America , and the Lanches ^ rine of Holland and Germany , and the Hampshire swine of America , which were supposed to originate in Hampshire , England , but undoubtedly are descendants of the Haarlem herds of long ago—all of these breeds possess a belt , a...

HANDY FARM HELPS [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 April 1909

HANDY FARM HELPS CHAIZf UHICEIH 0 B 8 For small doors , hinges made from link chain belts work very well . Take two links and fasten to the fence and gate with ordinary fence staples , as shown by the drawing . This of course is only an emergency . Good strap hinges are cheap enough for ordinary use and they are carried in stock by almost every general storekeeper . A : KETTLB SUPPORT A good support for a heavy kettle for outdoor use is made out of an old wagon tire . The tire is cut open , drawn . into a size to fit the kettle and welded . The four legs may be made of pieces of other wagon tire riveted to the circle . Legs put on in this way are placed so the kettle is solid , and because of the shape of the feet they dont sink much as single legs . For a large , heavy kettle it is better to use a heavy tire and heavy legs to make it solid in every way . It will give much better satisfaction , lf properly made it will last a lifetime . The length of the legs depend on whether the c...
