Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man Prepare for . Early Litters . It will not be long now before many of us will be looking for the first litleis of 1911 pigs . Are we taking the right care of the sows that the litters may come strong and vigorous ? I think most of the Berkshire breeders are on to their job , and are doing the right thing . See that the sows are taking plenty of exercise . If they are not , make them do so . Make it a point to be on hand at the proper time when the sow farrows . You say , you dont know just when . Why not ? It is your business to know exactly when to look for them . Do not meddle unless necessary , but be around any way . Have a barrel half full of chaff or cut straw . If it is a cold night put a big hot stone in the barrel , cover it over with some old sack , then the chaff and as fast as a new arrival comes put him in this warm place , covering it over with a blanket or something else to keep the heat in . When the whole litter have put in an appeara...

GILTS ON ROOKWOOD FARM , AMES , IOWA . Berkshires Have Most Good AI 1 are in good shape , and I am ex Points pecting a great lot of Spring pigs . Denton , Md . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Dear Sirs : I have recently purchased some very fine Berkshire breeding stock , and am becoming more enthusiastic as I read your valuable paper . I have come to fully believe that Berkshires have more good points than any other breed . I doubt that I should have seen this so clearly as soon had it not happened that the breeder from whom I purchased my boar was thoughtful enough to send me The Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman for one year as a present . Realizing that the paper has helped to enlighten me along these lines , I shall make it a point to send it free of charge to every purchaser of breeding stock from me , who is not already a subscriber . With best wishes for your continued usefulness , I am , Yours very truly , J . Frank Booth . A Letter From Fowler . Marietta , Geo...

Sold a Pair At $ 150 Each . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Sold a Pair At $ 150 Each . Blackstock , S . C . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —You will find my dollar for The Berkshire World . I cant afford to be without it . I consider It the most interesting paper I take of over a dozernr South Carolina is finding her way forward in the Berkshire business . I have recently sold a pair of sows for $ 150 . 00 each , that I bred and raised myself . A 500 pound Berkshire sow is not an unusual thing in South Carollina . I showed a sow at the State Fair that measured 72 inches around the heart girth . Hows that for South Carolina ? You can see pigs at the State Fair weighing over 600 pounds in the under year fat hog classes . We hope to have a public sale at Columbia some time during the fall of 1911 and hope you can be with us . I met your Mr . L . E . Frost at Mr . Edgar B . Moore s sale , and liked very much the way he conducted the sale . Wishing you every measure of success , I beg to reamin , Yours very truly , E . B ....

Outlook Never Better [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Outlook Never Better There are not nearly so many Berkshires in the country as should be among the farmers . And the breeders , not the breed , are to blame . The Berkshire outlook never was as good in this part of the country . The farmers here are this year waiting to try the Berkshire . I could have sold a third more male pigs and will soon be sold out of bred gilts . I have sixty Fall pigs that I am feeding by the Lovejoy method ( by warming the feed ) and l never saw Spring pigs do any better . I always read the Hog Notes in your paper first . Now to C . E . Stahl s question in the January issue in regard to showing hogs over age is quite a problem . This dishonesty is practiced by breeders that you would not believe would stoop to such a thing . But is is usually found out some time and then I do not think the press ought to withhold their names from the public . A Poland breeder from out West , who has shown his stock at Fairs considerably , was here this Fall . I showed him ...

Go To The Congress [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Go To The Congress The get of our herd boar , Superb 3 d , 131838 , is supplying a good number of farmers with the profitable kind . We are endeavoring to impress on farmers the importance of attending the American Berkshire Congress next month , as we are confident they can learn more about hogs ( and Berkshires in particular ) on February 7 th and 8 th , than they can any other way . Several have already signified their intention of attending the American Berkshire Congress and on to Millersburg the 9 th for the Helmuth sale . We are in accord with friend Spicer , regarding the American Berkshire Congress . Although we have never attended a meeting , we do read the papers . As to making new breeders of Berkshires , if you have a prospective buyer , and are unable to sell him yourself , direct him to some other Berkshire breeder ; dont let him stray away from the Berkshire fold , and take a chance of losing him to some other breed . We have done this and have not lost any money by ...

Signals on I . T . S [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1911

Signals on I . T . S The work of installing the Blake dispatcher s signals over one hundred and forty miles of the Illinois Traction System has been completed and they are now in operation . This will be a great assistance to the dispatchers , besides facilitating the movement of trains . They will also reinforce the work of the automatic block signal system in making operation safe in spite of human errors . These dispatchers signals are placed at every siding between Springfield and St . Louis and between Springfield and Decatur , besides other sections . This means that they will be about one mile apart . These signals place the movements of all trains more thoroughly under the direction of the dispatchers , and by their use a train can be stopped at any siding for orders or information . They will also be set at the danger position at a siding where two trains are to meet , thus adding an additional safeguard to the already perfect system of dispatching . About eighty of these s...
