To the mUor of the State Journal: Yesterday the Potomac Fruit-Growers' Society hold their May session, and an in teresting meeting it was. Several interest ing topics were discussed, a number of new members were elected, and measures taken to increase the efficiency of tho ex cellent association. Friend Gillingham, the ever-faithful President, was on hand ; but as the leading editor of the Journal was present taking notes, as he also en gaged in discussions, I will leave tho report of details to his active pen. Mr. Sanders gave the society useful ideas on many sub jects. I.y traveling about, I find the fruits in this section looking well, and give pro mise of fair yield. Though late, large pre parations are being made in the truck gar dens to give a good supply. From the Richmond Farmers' Gazette I glean the following items. Experiments with Seed s.—The committee appointed at the convention held in Chicago, on the 24th and 25th days of August last, to report a plan of exper iments to be Iried in common at the differ ent agricultural colleges of the country, submit the following : Experiment Ne. 1, to test the variation of soils on adjacent plats.—We recom mend that 20 plats of one-twelfth of an acre each, 2 by 4 rods, with strips of 4 feet between each, be selected on a soil as uni form as possible, which has not been ma nured, at least for a number of years. It sin mill be well drained, (tile-trained is best.) The aspect of tho whole should be tho same, and the slope, if any, as uniform as possible. Where nol uniform the facts should bo noted.
