WHAT IS PE-RU-NA? MEADE COUNTY NEWS AU KtVOlR. BUT NOT COOD-BY. MIX THIS YOURSELF Jctia D. Wahria, Pufc. MEADE, KAN 8 AS, Will England send a fleet to the Pacific, too?- The Pall Mall Gazette states that nobody has ever , really seen the sun. Probably meaning, nobody In London. So many women have been detected smuggling that dodging the customs of"cers would seem to rival bridge a feminine fad. Wireless telegraphy, turbines and floating hotels are taking the romance out of the mighty deep and substitute ing solid comfort for it. Prudence and desperation character ize the great general; the first quality- prepares him for fight and the last wins with one grand charge. Carping critics who object to prize ring faking should remember that in the pugilism business the box office most naturally figure largely. A Pullman conductor says the "up per berth is just as comfortable as the lower." Of course. And it is even more picturesque to get into. Perhaps the greatest requisite for a druggis...

MEADE COUNTY NEWS Mia D. Wehrle, Puk. MEADE, . KAN 8 AS. At Home. "I never was a hand to go gawping round!" contemptuously exclaimed an old woman who boasted of never hav ing seen a railway train or a trolley car or any town but her own. The generation of stay-at-homes In the country ig perhaps passing away the women they were chiefly women who prided themselves on their self Imprisonment on farm or in village aa a virtue, serving to demonstrate their devotion to home and children and duty. There is a class of men in the business world who have the same point of view in regard to the object of life. Such a one, dying at the age of 88, left a record of 65 years as the head of a banking house, during which he had been absent from his desk but two days and those were accounted for by a sprained ankle. No vacation, no travel, no day of summer leisure with wife and children 55 years of steady, unswerving routine! There is something impressive in the story of a lifetime of persistent toil...

MEADE : COUNTY NEWS Mm D. Wehrte, Puk. MEADE, . KAN 8 AS. Good Word for Bank Clerks. One new thing proposed at the bankers' meetings had special refer ence to bank clerks. The bank clerks ' In the country will be pleased to know that the new thing may ""go through before the time of next convention says Gilson Willets in Leslie's. . The new plan is to admit the bank clerks' association as part of the bankers' as sociation and give all the tellers and clerks a chance to attend the conven tions and have a voice in the busi ness. "And why not?" said a cashier of a big New York bank, while we sat with cashiers of other banks throughout the country. "The paying teller is. In fact, almost as Important a man in any bank as the cashier. He can break a bank quicker than any other one man on the premises. By dint of faultless memory he holds his cage. In the five hours of banking, the paying teller cashes perhaps thou ' sands of checks. At a single glance be must know Jiether the signature on...

ANOTHER BEAR FOR Louisiana Is Not the MR. BRYAN WOULD ACCEPT States, However, He Would Make no Fight for Nomination. Thinks He Owes it to His Party As sociates to Make His Po sition Known. Lincoln, Neb. William J. Bryan will accept the democratic nomination for president In 1908, but he will neither ask nor make a fight for it. He says that for a year or more he has been pressed to answer the question, "Will you accept nomination?" and he believes the public is entitled to an answer and to know the position he occupies. The question that ought to weigh most, he says, Is whether his nomination will strengthen the demo cratic party more than the nomination of some one else. Not only will he not seek or ask for the nomination, but he will not assume to decide the question of availability and If the prize falls to another, he will neither be dis appointed nor disgruntled. At the same time, he denies that he has wait ed this long In a desire to see whom the republicans are likely to nomi...

3 MEADE COUNTY NEWS Mm D. WehrU, Put MEADE, . . KAN8A8. Horseback Riding. , Doctors who prescribe horseback riding for their patients declare that it is the greatest exercise possible that is, the most beneficial, because it strengthens the muscles of the arms, back, neck and the nether limbs, stirs up the liver, stimulates circulation and produces a good, round, full, strong, healthful heart action. This particular wisdom of the medical fra ternity has long since demonstrated its worth, and the wonder of it all is that, knowing its corrective blessings In cases of nervousness, with their thousand and one other ailments of which racked nerves Is the parent, there are not more persons who will take horseback riding as a preventive for the ills when it can cure, says Christine McVale in Home Compan ion. A number of answers to this query have been made, and each has In It grains of truth, but it seems that no single 'word can answer the ques tion. The expense, ignorance of the way to r...

7.1EADE COUNTY NEWS Mm D. Wehrto, Put, MEADE, . KANSAS. Alaska: the Great and Rich. Alaska's extreme breadth from east to west Is 2,200 miles in an air line. According to Prof. Guyot, a recognized authority on all geographic matters the Island of Attu, in Alaska, is as far west of San Francisco as the coast of Maine is east of that city; or, in other words, San Francisco is the great middle city between the extreme easT and west of the United States, says ' Jay Monroe Latimer in Metropolitan Magazine, a fact which is very dim- cult for the eastern minds to grasp. The breadth of Alaska from north to south is 1,400 miles. Now about the coast line! According to the United States coast survey the shore line of Alaska, up and down the bays and around the islands, measures 25,000 miles, or two and one-half times that of the Atlantic and Pacific coast line of the remaining portion of the United States. The coast of Alaska, if ex. tended in a straight line, would belt the globe. Nearly 40 y...
