BTow* from the Sent of War. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 18 January 1855

BTow* from the Sent of War. The news from Europe and the Crimea is two weeks later than we published last week. Sebastopol still holds out against the besiegers, and in the meantime every house, inside of the fortifications, is being made into a fortress, and should the Allies succeed in capturing the outer forts, a long and desperate resistance will be made, for according to the most reliable accounts, all the houses arc well supplied with ammunition and provisions. The season favors the Russians, and is disastrous to the Allied Fleets. On the 14th of November last a dreadfol hurricane raged in the Black Sea, foundering two line of battle ships, the Sea Nymph and Princc, and all on board were lost. The Henry IV. and Pluto war vessels and thirty-two transport ships were totally lost, and three mail steamers and ten otiier vessels stranded. The siege of Sobaatopol will bo famous in history as the greatest and grandest conflict that ever occurred in the world. The news from the North ...

Condition of the Indians. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 18 January 1855

Condition of the Indians. There arc many Indians in our county who are in . j a suffering condition, and it is hoped there will be some action by the proper depariment to make "j such provision for them as will keep them from ac- ' tual starvation. Many of them arc aged and infirm, and ar£ left by the government to drag out a mis- : erable existence, living on roots and acorns when ' they can be obtained, but who are fast disappearing ; to the silent gretve for the want of food and cloth- j ing. The Missions have in days gonc-by supplied them with the necessaries of life, but now" this resource is gone. We notice tho same destitution prevails in the North and public meetings held to take into consideration the condition of this unfortunate people. Col. Hcn'ly has been applied to for relief, but as he has no authority to furnish provision to any who arc not living on the Reservations, he is not able to furnish the requested supplies. In his reply, Col. Henly says: "My authority goes ...

I A Card. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 18 January 1855

I A Card. 2o tht Public.—it is no more than I expected, to have my humble efforts in reforming the abuses in the Christian Churoh abused and slandered by men who have not the slightest idea or knowledge of the work or of me. They are, however, few in number, and persons I do not consider worth taking notice of; but if there are any who wish to combat my opinions, I will at all times be ready to meet them in a public discussion, so that the public may judge. WM. MOSEY. One of the gemß of the season is the JVew York Musical World, published by Richard Storrs Willis, editor and proprietor, No. 257 Broadway.— It combines a mass of instructive and entertaining reading matter ; and vocal and instrumental music, invaluable to the musical student, and amusing to the general reader. The terms arc $3 a year in advance, including two splendid portraits of cmi nent musical composers, cither of which is worth the subscription price. We should be pleased to see it well patronizecj in this city an...

The Legislature. Kill. 1 • .« [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 18 January 1855

The Legislature. Kill. 1 • .« There has been very little business of interest to our citizens, transacted. Dr. McFarland on the 10th inst. offered a resolution, specifying the manner in which the Senatorial Election should be conduc. ted. The resolution and remarks on its adoption are as follows: THE SENATORIAL ELECTION. Mr. McFarland rose and said that it appeared to him that the resolution passed yesterday respecting the election of U. S. Senator, was not sufficiently explicit, and therefore offered the following concurrent resolution, which would cover the point, he thought not {.sufficiently definite : f Rcaolved by the Assembly, the Senate concurring. That in proceeding to the election of United Sates Senator, on Wednesday, the 17th inst., (as provided for by a resolution which passed the two Houses on the 9th inst.) each Member of the Assembly shall, as his name is called by the Secretary or Clerk, rise iu his place and vote for one person as United States Senator; and that, if...

Novrs from Atlantic Papers. The vote of the State of New York at the recent j election is # offlcially proclaimed. Clark's majority i for Governor is 309. A telegraphic despatch in the New York papers states the failure of J. W. Blodget & Co. (heavy dry goods dealers) for two million of dollars. It is understobd that resolutions will be offered in Congress for ihquiry into the management and utility of the Smithsonian Institution, and as to the expediency of abolishing it and Returning the bequest by which it was founded. Late advices from Texas state that Senators Houston and Rusk have approved, in writing, the course pursued bv Gov. Pease in rejecting the securities tendered by Messrs. Later from europe [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 18 January 1855

Later from europe Another Sanguinary Battle In Ulc Gsiinca—Tc • Allies before Selmitopolk By the arrival of the Sierra Nevada nt -an Francisco, our English dates are five days advances'. The news is brought up to the 22d of November. Another desperate and sanguinary encounter b"fore Sebastopol had taken place. A Russian sortie of forty thousand men attacked the Allied position. The loss of officers among the English was fearful. Since June 18,1,815, says the London Time*, the British army has not fought so bloody a battle as that which for all future ages will mark vh» sth of November, 1854. The glorious and triumphant battle of the Alma, and the disastrous but still glorious battle Of Balaklava, are now both eclipsed in terrible importance by the battle of Sebastopol. Last Sunday week, from early dawn, the allied army withstood fof seven hours the desperate onslaught of 50.000 men, great part of them, fresh from Perekop and the depots in the Crimea, under Russia's ablest generals, ...

Cathcart collected about 8000 men, with whom he opposed the Russians, and for more than two hours this handful of gallant fellows fought with the most heroic intrepidity against an armv numerically bo superior, when French troops arrived in all haste, and joining the English, with an admirable spirit of fraternization, opposed the enemy with a corps of about 3000 men. who charged the Russian columns, driving them back with the mostirresistibl* impetuosity.
